I upgraded from win 8.1 pro to win 10 pro a little while ago. This was an upgrade not a clean install.
Do I need to remake my password resets ? I currently have one for every user on every machine.
everything is local account. I don't use the ms account for anything.
I was thinking that might be the safest course of action. Thought someone might know for sure.
You will be just as well off writing the passwords down somewhere secure. The password reset disk is merely an expensive alternative.
I always write user account passwords down on a piece of paper that I keep inside one of those dog nametag cylinder things attached to my main keyring -Here's a [UK] link for ID tags https://www.amazon.co.uk/Pet-Barrel-.../dp/B00DEB1JVQ There are lots of available choices but I bought ones that, like these, have a slot in the bottom for me to swing off so I can be confident they won't come apart accidentally while I'm out & about.
By the way, others have wondered about the use of PRDs after an upgrade but I have never seen any reports of somebody putting it to the test.

I do keep them in my password manager, but figure a reset disk is a safety net.
The flash drive isn't really expensive. I think I paid about $8. I keep all of them on the one drive.
Maybe I'll give the reset a try although it does occur to me that as create reset obviates the old one, it kind of suggests the next question. Which is if I create a new reset and decide to go back to the previous OS, have I wiped out that reset disk? Or, given I'd do a complete restore, would the old one work?

Well I have an n=1 study for does the old key work after an upgrade to win10
It does.
I logged out. Hit the return a couple times to get to the reset link. It took the reset and presented the pwd/pwd/hint screen. Filled it out and logged in with the new password. Did it a second time and reverted back to my current password.
This is the first report of conducting a Password Reset Disk test after an upgrade to Windows 10.
Very useful for those relying on their PRDs.
