Please try the link in the second post to permanently disable Windows Defender.
If you believe that Windows Firewall is on, search for it and open it (NOT Windows Firewall with Advanced Security), click "Turn Windows Firewall on or off", and select both of the "Turn off Windows Firewall (not recommended)" radio buttons and click "OK".
Thanks, the problem is, when I do this, it re-enables network discovery and file sharing, which for the moment I do not want. Then when I try to disabled network discovery and file sharing, it turns Windows Defender back on. I've also uninstalled bitdefender using their uninstall tool, reinstalled and repaired several times.

First problem I have is with grammar. The folks at Microsoft should know NOT to use a coma and the word But next to each other as they mean the same thing.. grammatically this is wrong and redundant. This reads as major unprofessional.
Second problem is the language, it's rude. Who The Hell does Microsoft think they are not being gentile about this 180 change of events. People aren't gonna be happy about this change in policy for defender but they sound so flip about it.
Third problem is of course this app is not critical to the operation of the operating system (it's an extra offered for your use but in no way critical.) I can and should be able to replace this software with any anti-virus I choose. If Microsoft demands they have the right to turn on this unwanted software whenever they like then it WILL cause problems for other anti-virus software or apps I wish to run. I need to disable this completely so Microsoft cannot turn it back on. Whats the hack for this fix?[/QUOTE]
I'm seeing a similar thing. I have Bitdefender Total Security 2016 installed. Windows Defender seems to turn itself on and then stay on, even after restarts and reboots. Bitdefender seems oblivious to this, just sits there doing whatever it is that it does... Does not complain or give any warning. Neither does Windows 10.
I recon it is a bug or incompatibility in Bitdefender. Ironically I upgraded to the new 2016 version because it touted Win10 compatibility.
I removed AVAST because it started to become annoying. Decided to give the new version of Windows Defender a try, because it's supposedly much better under Windows10.
Question: How do I stop it from telling me that I need to scan my computer every blessed day? I like the Real-Time Protection, but do not want it wanting to run a quick scan whenever it feels like it. (BTW.. This "quick" scan takes 45 minutes!) I'll manually run a scan from time-to-time, just like I did with Avast and the older Windows Defender.
