probably didnt say things exactly right. goes against the idea of having so much know-how easily available. so that's no good. but with lots of different ways of doing the same thing, I do get mixed up easily.

and I don't have that symbol on my taskbar....surprise

TC If you want to delete this post with what I'm about to say, it's OK with me but it's time for me to speak up.

ImLost you have been provided with support as well as encouragement along the way.

The subject of this thread is "Is Windows Defender Adequate". That has been answered in the positive more than once. Your WD settings are in order. Mark this thread as solved and move on.

    Move on meaning the following.
I'm going to paraphrase something I brought up in a prior post. No more quotes or looking back.
Run don't walk and take your laptop to a local computer shop. Have them fix what needs to be done.
At a minimum schedule an annual appointment to keep your laptop in top shape.

mm, so wd is 'adequate' now that I have all green? I'll try the pua again to add to it. can you tell me how/where to check if it is enabled/disabled?

I'll check when the new version comes thru, see what happens from there. thanks

The tutorial includes a link to a safe test file to check if pua detection is working....

    EXAMPLE: Windows Defender PUA protection
To download a safe PUP test file: Feature Settings Check AMTSO
Enable or Disable Windows Defender PUA Protection in Windows 10

...although currently the test file is unavailable, saying...

Some of the AMTSO Security Features Check Tools (SFCs) are currently unavailable, due to technical issues beyond our control. Apologies for any inconvenience. We aim to restore full functionality as soon as possible, please check back later.

PUA is not a default setting in Windows Defender. You would have to start changing settings in the registry if you want that on for Defender. I would leave well alone if I was you. I use Windows Defender and I don't have PUA set up.
If you decide that you do want a programme to check for PUP's and PUM's...then do like I do..just run Malwarebytes Free and scan with that once every week or two. I don't use ADWCleaner just Malwarebytes Free. No need to change any of the default settings. Just install and run it. Malwarebytes is optional..you can manage without it. It depends how careful you are when surfing the internet and not opening unrecognised email attachments etc

It is easy and safe to enable PUA detection in all versions, including Home, using this tutorial.

Enable or Disable Windows Defender PUA Protection in Windows 10

I have PUA detection enabled on all my machines, it works well without causing any problems.

okay now the 'fake test' is available. It says if I could download it, it means pua is not enabled. I could not download it, so this means pua is enabled and all set.
and like I was asked to say, I have version 1809, but it went up to os build 17763.864, up from .805.

should I still do 'reset' of my msft edge (tutorial) even thou I have the pua enabled, and I have malwarebyes and ccleaner (still having trouble getting adwcleaner).

or am I in the wrong forum now?

You can download adwcleaner here :

Malwarebytes | AdwCleaner - Free Adware Cleaner & Removal Tool
Click on the Green Free Download button.
