I know what you mean. I apologize for including that.
Please try the updated instructions in post #30. I hope the instructions are clearer.

did 'save as, then #5 'save next to cancel'. got the narrow bar below that, did not touch that.
closed the tutorial. I dbl clk the icon I see on my desktop. I do run, yes, yes, ok, then that screen goes away. (I do not get the popup saying 'unknown publisher', clk on 'run').
that's it. there's no place to answer 'yes' (what's uac stand for?). no 'registry editor' screen asking if I want to continue.

I have the desktop icon, and I still have that narrow bar "run-open folder-view downloads".

I'm beginning at Save As before step 5
    Is Windows Defender Adequate-save-.jpg

After you click on Save As, follow Step 5.
    5. Save the .reg file to your desktop.
--- Do not touch the File name or the Save as type.

Save the reg file to your desktop
    Is Windows Defender Adequate-save-reg-file-your-desktop.jpg
At the bottom of this screen, click Save which is next to Cancel.

    Clicking on Save gives me
    Is Windows Defender Adequate-do-not-touch-any-those-options.jpg
Don’t touch any of those options.

Close the tutorial. You can wait until the end if you wish. Both ways worked for me.

On your desktop you will see the reg file icon: mine doesn’t show the full title and yours probably won’t either but I expanded it so you can tell this is the correct icon to work with.

    6. Double click/tap on the downloaded .reg file to merge it.

    7. When prompted, click/tap on Run, Yes (UAC), Yes, and OK to approve the merge.
I get an Unknown publisher pop-up and click on Run.
--- Since you don’t see a pop-up that reads Unknown publisher continue to the next step.

That’s when you will see the (UAC) screen which is User Account Control screen.
On the UAC screen, click Yes.

The next screen will be a Registry Editor screen that will ask you Are you sure you want to continue? Click Yes.

    A successful result will show
    Is Windows Defender Adequate-successful-result-will-show.jpg
    Click OK.

    8. Restart the computer to apply.

    9. You can now delete the downloaded .reg file if you like.

Excellent detailed instructions. If I may, just to avoid a question from ImLost, a little bit more on how you did this.

    Is Windows Defender Adequate-2019-10-31_06h20_37.png

    I simulated what will happen.

    Before:

    Is Windows Defender Adequate-2019-10-31_06h18_22.png

    After:

    Is Windows Defender Adequate-2019-10-31_06h19_31.png

All I did to show the entire file name description was click on any open space on the Desktop. Hovering the mouse cursor over the Icon also works in most cases. Pressing the F5 function key also may work.

This is only an explanation of the "Expand" of the title.

Larry, I'll be more than happy to remove this post if you wish.

Hi Dick, do not remove your post. I always enjoy learning something new and/or an improved item.

    Here's what I did

    Original desktop icon

    Left click once becomes

I know what you said @ImLost but that was before I adjusted for better explanations in post #34.
--- Now it sounds like the problems are still there.

    OK let's try this.
Restart the laptop and repeat the process from the beginning one more time.
--- When you are at the Save As step before step #5, follow the instructions in post #34.
--- Are the instructions in post #34 clear enough?

    same again....no uac screen

*** Edit - only thing I noticed was where you say to "dbl clk/tap on the downloaded .reg file to merge it" - I assume it's same as saying to "dbl clk/tap on the....new desktop icon".

gone over things, can't see where Im missing something.

I don't think you are missing out on anything either. Let me get back to you sometime tomorrow.

    - - - Updated - - -

In the meantime, check the status of your Windows Defender settings

In the lower right corner of your taskbar, you will see a Show hidden icon
    --- Left click on it
    Is Windows Defender Adequate-show-hidden-icons.png

One of the items in there is the Windows Security icon.
--- Mine is checked in Green. What color is yours checked in?
    Is Windows Defender Adequate-windows-defender-icon.png

Right click on the Windows Security icon
--- One of the items in there is View security dashboard
    Is Windows Defender Adequate-view-security-dashboard.png
--- Left click the View security dashboard

Security at a glance shows up
    Is Windows Defender Adequate-security-glance.png
Are any of them checked in other than Green?

Don't change anything yet: let us know the results.
