    "Security at a glance"
You need to say which under each of those three categories.
Then expand those with yellow triangles with the blue "manage settings" link.

e.g. under Virus & threat protection click the "manage settings" link underneath.
On mine due to low Internet speeds I have "Cloud-delivered protection" > Off
    Auto sample submission > Off

This does lead to the occasional yellow triangle in the Windows Security Task bar icon and in the "Security at a glance" page.
There should be a "dismiss" link below which you click a number of times for each, in my case twice, which gets back to a green tick circle.
You may have to close and re-open the Security Centre to get that green tick circle.

I guess it is MS keep reminding people it does not like your settings. Irritating but basically it is a for a good cause.

I dont get it. like I said, gets more confusing. thought I gave a better answer than just saying ok. I thought I answered the question in #42 and 43. after I said what I found in the security dashboard, I said which ones did not have the green check mark, and said I did not try to change them like you said. I was trying to 'stay on track', so I repeated again what I found in the dashboard. guess I missed something, but I don't know what. didn't think Id sound like a wiseguy by giving the answers again, didn't mean it to sound that way at all.

helmut - it gets confusing trying to follow bunch of different guys giving info, even thou right, makes it hard to 'stay on track'. I was trying to follow "meandmy....", and I thought I was doing that.

Hi ImLost let’s move on to get your 3 WD items addressed.
--- Threat protection, account protection, and device performance and health.
Let’s select Threat protection first: note that it’s Virus & threat protection. There are times exact wording is very important. Fortunately, in this case we know what you mean.

    Is Windows Defender Adequate-wd-virus-threat-protection.jpg

--- What does it say that causes the yellow triangle to be there? (Exact wording please).
--- We can move on to the next step after knowing that.

In one of my posts, I mentioned “Don't change anything yet: let us know the results.”
--- That applies to don’t change anything, add or remove anything else on the computer such as CCleaner, Malwarebytes etc.
--- If you sense a need to do something else, please ask first.
--- We can’t see your computer.

If the exclamation mark ImLost is seeing here refers to tamper protection being turned off. The solution is very simple..just turn it back on and the box will be green again. I see this every time there is a cumulative update. You just have to enable it again

hi mm, thought you gave up on me as a lost cause.

I happened to check the dashboard again yesterday, and the v/t protection one now had a green check (?). then I noticed in helmuts post mentioning the word 'dismiss' under them. said to try clicking a bunch of times, and so I did. and then those other two items got the green check.

so now with all green, I went back to your posts, and tried things again, but still reached the same dead end, no uac screen. also, even thou I have the new icon on my desktop, I checked in control panel/programs, and I don't see any pua listed....is it supposed to be there?

when you said not to change anything before, I thought you meant about the options in that narrow bar, or stuff with the yellow triangle. yesterday I tried that 'dismiss' thing cause I thought you gave up on me, and I get mixed up jumping around to different solutions from too many diff people. and that was such an easy thing for me to try. I thought the Malwarebytes/adwcleaner/ccleaner stuff would help in meantime.

@ImLost it's good to see everything back to green again.
--- I am not going back the pua yet: naturally you can go back to it if you wish to do so.
I believe it’s time to tackle the performance issues on your computer.
It’s been mentioned more than once that WD will suffice for you.
    --- Today mission is accomplished.

First let us know what version you are on.
Type winver in the Type here to search box at the bottom left of the taskbar
    Click on open.

Here is a representative winver result that was included in post #22.

That's good. This coming week Tue Nov 12 is Patch Tuesday. The 2nd Tuesday of each month is Patch Tuesday.
In your case, can you leave your laptop on overnight so this Nov's Windows updates come through during "inactive hours"?

Go to Settings > Update and Security > That brings you to the Windows update page.
--- Further down you will see Change active hours. Let us know what the Currently active hours are on your system.
--- Hours outside of those active hours are when Windows Updates should come through unless you are still using the laptop during those "scheduled inactive" hours.
--- I've seen some situations in which Windows Updates do not come through on Patch Tuesday but under normal conditions they do.
--- When yours do come through let us know the new version.
--- It could become Version 1809 (OS Build 17763.832) or maybe even move up to Version 1903 (OS Build 18362.xxx)
--- The xxx will have a number: I don't recall what it will be.

OK back in post #47 you mentioned"and keeping a backup image, and restore.....and I don't get the thing about doing w10 updates because I read those are done automatically."
--- Actually that isn't unusual for a lot of people I help to think the same way.
--- But the key is to understand how to ensure that plan is in play.

    Please go to
Why Does Windows 10 Update So Much?
Why Does Windows 10 Update So Much?

Read the entire article. It isn't necessary to understand every thing with the technicalities included. Just know that's the reality of the computer world. It's beyond our control but what is in our control is how we maintain our computers with the normal tools at hand.

If I or anyone else isn't clear enough for you, please let us know immediately.

After this Windows Updates is in order we can move on to the next step of what needs to be done to have your new laptop run like new as it should as best as possible with the intent to live a long as it should.
--- In that case, I suspect it makes sense to move to an appropriate forum based on the issue at hand so we aren't mixing up different issues in one post.

@ImLost I'd like to recommend you use an 8 1/2 x 11 notebook to note issues that come up with exact wording and/or "code" numbers when possible along with your description of what's happening: that way you will be able to relate to what has happened and what is still happening. I've seen people use "scraps" of paper and that is not a good idea. You can post whatever issue that comes up in an appropriate forum.

Keep in mind that this Tue Nov 12 is Patch Tuesday. Review the notes about Patch Tuesday. Any questions, I would go to the Windows Updates and Activation forum.

There are many members who are much more advanced than I am who will certainly be able to provide valuable assistance which I myself appreciate. If you feel there is a conflict of advice, mention that immediately but the final decision comes down to what you choose to do. You might not think so but I like working with you especially since I remember my roots.

EDIT: As one veteran to another, have a happy Veteran's day.

I usually leave it on all the time, once in a while do off/on. or a restart, and sometimes it says 'working on updates, might restart several times'.

I couldnt even find where it said updates and security, kept staring at things, thought how can I be stuck already. but I had it set for high contrast to switch between on/off, because lots of things seem faded or otherwise real hard to read, and I stumbled upon that. I have to use that on some things, then its no good on others, so I have to go back and forth. so I had to close that one to be able to find the updates and security.

I put the hours as 7am to 1am (the max 18 hrs), do I make sure that I am not doing something on the comp beyond those hours, or only make sure it is turned on?

read the w10 updates article, a little confusing, sounds like everything goes thru as long as there is a reboot once in a while?

as far as moving to the next step, and my issues, I had asked about making w10 defender better because I got blocked/frozen. It was said to try alt+f4 or tsk mgr next time it freezes, and defender is better by adding pua, and using Malwarebytes, adwcleaner, and ccleaner. so with this talk about updates and patches, is this still on track to enable the pua that I got stuck on halfway thru?

ImLost, I know you'd rather have one contact, but can I just offer this for how to get to Updates and Security.

On the bottom right side of the screen on the Task Bar, click this:

    Is Windows Defender Adequate-2019-11-09_18h36_21.png

    then click this:

    Is Windows Defender Adequate-2019-11-09_18h37_28.png

Then you will see this. Click Updates and Security.
