the icon has a yellow triangle with exclamation point inside of it.

3 of the items in the security box also have that.

We'll need to know which are the 3 items that have the yellow warning triangles in order to be able to help you

    sportsfan148 post #42 is correct.
"We'll need to know which are the 3 items that have the yellow warning triangles in order to be able to help you"

The subject of this thread "Is Windows Defender Adequate" will be solved to ensure Windows Defender settings are properly in place.

Also on my post #40, I mentioned
    1. In the lower right corner of your taskbar, you will see a Show hidden icon
    --- Left click on it
    2. One of the items in there is the Windows Security icon.
    3. Right click on the Windows Security icon
--- One of the items in there is View security dashboard
On this one, you can left click instead as it will take you directly to the Security at a glance dashboard.

?....I did follow your post 40....I did see the "security at a glance dashboard".....I just shortened it when I said 3 of the items in the... "security box".,.. have the triangle.

the three are virus and threat protection, account protection, and device performance and health.

I added the malwarebytes, said 'free trial version' of the paid one, then it goes to the free one? and ccleaner looks like it keeps trying to trick me into a paid version when I try to get the latest version of the free one I had, but had not kept updated.

had trouble trying to do the AdwCleaner, something about doing away with some stuff that was pre installed on computer, and I was worried about getting rid of something I should not get rid of, didn't seem right.

and I still did not mess with any of the stuff that I said above that had the yellow triangle.

    Hi there
a lot of these 3rd party things often prompt or nag to "Go Pro" or "update" --i.e go for the paid version.

IMO on HOME computers all you need these days is WD (update regularly via Windows update) and BRAIN --i.e surf sensibly, avoid scams etc etc.

I don't believe ANY of the current 3rd party AV software these days (again on HOME not corporate / business / enterprise networks) brings anything at all to the table-- even the much used Malwarebytes -- any more. Those programs were developed many years ago when Windows was about as useful as a chocolate teapot in Virus protection. Nowadays Windows 10 built in WD is very robust and as good as anything else on the market.

Malwarebytes was excellent in the days where that type of program was needed --but Windows OS is so much better these days and of course the whole "Hacking Industry" has changed -- nobody bothers with hacks to "mom and pop" computers --they want to make money by attacking infrastructure, ransoming large companies, interfering with democratic elections (e.g Russia involved in Trump's election and UK Brexit process and current UK General election -- and no doubt other countries politics too) and all sorts of other things we probably can't even begin to guess at.
Home users need to protect themselves against things like identity fraud and scams which can't easily (if at all) be prevented by software.

I often post here about this and ask a question -- what have any of these 3rd party AV programs found that WD has missed -- and guess what -- I never see any answers !!!!!!

Just ensure WD and windows is up to date and regularly scan -- also ensure the real time protection is on.

Always have decent backups too as it's quicker (by far) and more reliable to do a Windows restore than manually try and cleanse an infected computer.

Plenty of decent free backup programs -- a favorite on these forums is Macrium Free -- also excellent customer service for those that have the paid version -- for basic backup / restore the free version is good enough for most users -- and there's absolutely no nag etc to get paid version.

    Cheers

just gets more confusing. Ive been waiting on how to 'fix' the the 'yellow triangles' I have inside w d, posts 41 42, 43.
was keeping track of things after I had the problem of getting blocked/frozen.
said windows defender with pua and adwcleaner. then running malwarebyes and ccleaner once in a while would take care of things.

and keeping a backup image, and restore.....and I don't get the thing about doing w10 updates because I read those are done automatically.

On “just gets more confusing”: yes it does. Please stay on track for dealing with the yellow triangles in Windows Defender. That was the purpose of my post #40.
--- I mentioned “In the meantime, check the status of your Windows Defender settings” with some screenshots. At the end I finished with” Are any of them checked in other than Green?
Don't change anything yet: let us know the results.”

On your comment “was keeping track of things after I had the problem of getting blocked/frozen.

--- Those are extra factors that will need to be addressed afterward but right now Windows Defender needs to be addressed up front and that was the purpose of my comment “Don't change anything yet”.
--- We can help you address Windows Defender but we need to stay on track please.
--- If you answer with OK, that will be excellent.

I don't see this as an OK. Good luck on your future computing.
