Virus scan options missing - quick scan only, advanced scan crashes

Title pretty much says it all - my Windows Defender "Virus & threat protection" window shows only the "scan now" button with no quick/full/custom options. See screenshot.

In addition, clicking "Run a new advanced scan" causes a brief wait-pointer before the window simply closes.

Is there a way to restore access to the scan options?

    Many thanks,

    Mark A.

What version of Windows 10 are you running, that screen looks rather different to mine.

In mine we have Scan options

Which takes you to this option where you can choose quick, full or custom.

The last version in which this screen was named 'Windows Defender Security Centre' was 1803. From 1809 on it was renamed 'Windows Security'.

Clicking 'Run a new advanced scan' should give you all the scan options.

Try running SFC /SCANNOW in a Command Prompt (Admin) to find and repair possible system corruption.

Just done an SFC - "some corrupt files were found but couldn't be fixed", and "run a new advanced scan" still crashes.

A CBS log was generated but it's gobbledegook to me; I can post it if it might help.

WOW. Not only did this fix the OP issue, it also fixed a broken settings link in the start menu!

Have to keep DISM in mind next time...

I always use them together . That is run sfc first then dism to fix what sfc missed or couldn't.

In worse case I always have an up to date Macrium image to re install.
I would suggest you download Macrium free and make an image just in case.

    Better safe then sorry.

Try rebooting to safe mode and try again running the scan

Just ran an sfc scan and it's working again?!

    *smh.

EDIT - and now it's broken again. In less than ten minutes.

Summary - it mostly doesn't work, but occasionally does. At this point I'm thinking there's some kind of clash with another program...
