for Malwarebytes I've noticed it doesn't do this. Only finding stuff when you run a scan. Maybe because it's the free version or maybe I need to turn something on I don't know.
That's right. The free version doesn't prevent. It removes when you scan. The paid version prevents.

I figured that. This is why I would like to find a preventive antivirus that is preferably free.

Try Avira Free Antivirus + BgPKiller. Then you can disable defender forever.

Try this antivirus: 360 Total Security: Free Antivirus Protection | Virus Scan & Removal for Windows, Mac and Android
It's free. You can download essential version (just basic AV) or all-in-one with additional features. It's completely free and doesn't bother you to upgrade to paid version. it does it's job well and saved me few times. I've been using it for years already. It also uses Avira and Bitdefender engines as well if you enable it and has all the modern security features starting from anti-ransomware & ending with RAT... Hi there

The best solution PLUS of course surf safely, avoid scams (not detectable by A.V software in any case) and don't give too much information on social media sites etc.

WD is more than sufficient these days -- old software that people have used since Windows 2000 etc was designed for a different era -- WD for home users with online real time protection is absolutely 100% all you need --and take regular image backups, You don't need Malwarebytes, Avast, norton etc etc anymore these days --and especially with the rate Windows gets new builds and updates running these A/V systems probably will cause windows not to update and even crash it at the next build.

    Cheers

Qihoo's 360 av is a very weak av as far as real-time protection is concerned.
