    Problems with AVG & Avast

I'm having problems with both AVG and Avast...Of course those are both the free ones.

So I'm looking for a different antivirus that is free and doesn't conflict with other programs.

I have malwarebytes installed but I don't feel secure enough with just that. I used Avast for a long time (it always stopped viruses for me) but it's conflicting with other things so much that whenever I go to troubleshoot something the common answer I'm giving is it's Avast...get rid of Avast.

Lots of knowledgeable and experienced people here on the Forums rely on Windows Defender and MBAM (free) to protect their machines. As long as you rigorously stick to 'safe computing' that should be sufficient to keep you and your system and data out of trouble.

I would advise against using AVG and Avast, they're insidious. Most members here run Defender plus Malwarebytes (myself included).

You can try this tool for Avast and this tool for AVG.

Avast owns AVG so pointless having both, shouldn't run two AVs at the same time anyway.

Been using Defender and Malwarebytes ever since Win10's inception and had zero problems.

Defender though has an issue, it is not by default configured to detect PUP.
You need to modify and do it.

I also use Defender and the Premium version of Malwarebytes. I suggest if you go that route, To set MB to never register in the action center.

I've been that route for a long time. I bought the lifetime license before MBM withdrew it. I think you have me confused with the thread starter.

I was agreeing with you. No confusion.

I was a long time AVG user going back to Windows 2000 and long before Microsoft Security Essentials was introduced. At the timer I think it was a good product. But like many products it succumbed to feature bloat. I can understand that. The AV market is competitive and it is very hard to sell a product based on the features it doesn't have. But the continual pestering to upgrade to the paid version became very annoying and there were other issues as well. Eventually I uninstalled it and went with Microsoft Security Essentials. That was with Windows 7.

I am now on Windows 10 and Windows Defender. It seems to do a good job, and stays out of the way. Considering the number of competitors there are probably better choices. But which one? Take any popular AV product and you will find strongly held opinions both for and against. Considering I have little trouble with malicious software I have little interest in considering others.

I only ever used either AVG or Avast not both at the same time. Just wanted to clarify that...I had used AVG until I started having problems then switched to Avast. Also I didn't know AVG owned Avast good to know.

As for Malwarebytes I've always had that but I only have the free version and I don't know I just don't feel fully protected. As for Avast as soon as you click a link (like on facebook ) Avast blocks it right away...as for Malwarebytes I've noticed it doesn't do this. Only finding stuff when you run a scan. Maybe because it's the free version or maybe I need to turn something on I don't know.

EDIT: I've also noticed even though I have it set to run on windows start...it's not showing in the taskbar...so I don't think it's running or it's icon is hidden though I never hid it.
