The British publication VirusBulletin has always seemed 100% transparent and above board, IMHO. https://www.virusbulletin.com/

Does it ever test Windows Defender for comparison?

(I tried searches going back years, but couldn't find.)

Unlikely, as the VB100 test regime requires that the AV can be tested on both Windows 10 and Windows 7.

To display a VB100 logo, a product must:
    • Prove it can detect at least 99.5% of malware samples listed as 'In the Wild' by the WildList Organization
    • Generate no more than 0.01% false positives when scanning an extensive test set of clean samples
    • All this must be done with default, out-of-the-box settings in the VB lab environment on two test platforms (currently Windows 10 and Windows 7)

Ah, that's what I was missing. Thanks.
