Is it necessary to install an antivirus in Windows 10?

I am pretty new in Windows 10 and I am suprised that Virus & Theat protection has a green tick. Upon now it was necessary to install an antivirus. Does Windows 10 comes with propiertary antivirus? How reliable is it?

Defender is best to use. Stick with the built in that comes with Windows

Windows 10 includes Windows Defender (to be renamed Microsoft Defender soon).

Anything more depends on your risk behaviour. If you choose to expose your PC by visiting dubious sites, or downloading some torrents, for example, then you are much more at risk.

Note that an AV program will probably not help with ransomware. There are specialised programs for that.

Sandboxing is an interesting option if you wish to take special precautions.

Stay with built-in Windows Defender. That and little bit of common sense is all you need.

    Yes, Defender.

    How reliable is it?

Independent tests rank Windows Defender up there with the rest of them.

It can be made better by enabling PUA (aka PUP) detection.

Bree is correct. And as you look at the AV-Test results, click on the little arrow to the right of WD's 6 5.5 6 results & you'll see the details of the WD results.

WD is below average for 'Performance' because it slows down many installations more than other AV packages do. So you will be worse off only once in a blue moon yet will have the benefit of WD's simplicity in use all the time.

    @puertas12 -

    Always remember... security in layers.

I like Windows Defender and Norton Security. NS is my preference and is a yearly paid subscription.
NS also can handle Ransomware and other attacks. It also has it's own Firewall.

However, you also need to download Malwarebytes (MBAM) Free Edition and use that in conjunction with any AV/FW
    You can download it here:

Malwarebytes Download - Free Virus Scan & Virus Protection Tool | Malwarebytes

Install and revert to the Free version as you do not want two AV's running the same time consistently, but only on demand.

So WD or NS would be your first line of defense, as it runs full-time and MBAM only when needed to double check.

There are other programs to have, as well, but this is a good start. Always practice safe browsing habits.

Post back with any other questions.

    Hi there

On a Home computer -- Absolutely NO !!!!!

Forget Malwarebytes, Norton, Avast,Kasperky etc -- these are 20C (20th century) solutions -- For domestic computers WD is more than adequate -- the modern danger is in SCAMS that try and get identity thefts, Bank fraud, e-commerce etc etc -- what "sensible" hacker these days is bothering to hack a "Mom and Pop" computer for almost zero USD gain. A simple email scam will net them far more money.

BYE BYE Malwarebytes, Avast, McAfee, Norton and all the rest --- Don't even THINK of installing these any more in 2019 --not needed any more --WD works in so far as any of these things do.

Be aware of Scams --these are much more likely to cause problems

and I say this as one who has used places like TPB etc in the past -- and never got a Virus from those sites either.

So don't look at a C20 solution to solve a C21 probem -- forget Malwarebytes etc etc.

I think my position on a load of "So called Computer security experts" here is well known as far as domestic (i.e home) computers - To me they are all B/S -- nothing though in my above post suggests that Cloud. commercial, national infastructure etc shouldn't be protected -that's where these companies if they still want to exist should base their efforts on -- wasting time on the domestic market will be their demise.

    Cheers

Thanks for the answer. I would like to give a try to Malwarebytes however I can only see the trial version. Where is the free version?

That is the free version. After the trial/tease runs out, you get the “Free” version. I would only use third party tools like MBAM with discretion. Only need to run those tools if you start showing signs of an infection.
