Is it necessary to install an antivirus in Windows 10?

I used to like Microsoft OneCare I was gutted when it got discontinued. Wish they would think about a remake.

I had mine set to "Let Malwarebytes apply........." for several years and never had an issue between MWB paid version and WD.

Two or three months ago, I read something that caused me to switch to "Never register............". Most likely, I read it on this forum, but cannot recall the details. Considering I'd never had problems, the change to "Never" was probably unnecessary, but I amuse myself by saying "maybe I avoided a future problem". The truth is I have a history of not being able to leave well enough alone---unfortunately not confined to PC issues.

They recommend this if you are running another anti-virus such as WD.

It does things Defender doesn't do and has protected me from crap web sites numerous times, and no, I don't mean porn. just site that look legit but turn out not to be.

You say you;ll guarantee this but you can't. It's your opinion and that's fine but please leave it at that.

JUST READ what the normal problems are with typical computers

you say Fake Internet sites is one -- that's a given but because they are "genuine URL"'s how is an A/V program going to detect what's a genuine site and what's a fake one.

I think the disservice is in a load of people - probably security I.T guys in fear of losing their contracts in suggesting that people install all this stuff on their PC's when the real problem is to determine how to stop being scammed, etc etc.

And I think and I'll say it again and again -- Malwarebytes et al -- their time has passed and it's infinitely better for users to understand where THE REAL problems come on the Internet.

As a test I tried the "hideous malwarbytes" on a system with a fake UK HMRC site (income tax site offering free refunds etc etc) and the proper uk.gov site.

Of course Malwarebytes didn't flag up the fake URL as defective --how could it --it wasn't a virus or even conventional malware. The fake site didn't have any malware attached to it other than of course normal type of screens where people could login and give their own personal details including Bank accounts -- so how's malwarebytes going to interpret those types of sites --absolutely zero malware in them !!!

BRAIN of course was the best protection.

So whether you like it or not I'm still going to express my opinion on these types of programs --if you don't like it then just report my post to the mods.

I always do exhaustive testing before posting stuff and I can assure you for a lot of "Innocuous Fake websites" malwarebytes is totally useless.

I also test stuff with "genuine Viruses" as well so I'm just not on a "High Horse" here --I'm trying both to save people money and explain to them how to stop getting ripped off these days by incresaingly sophisticated computer scams and frauds which no A/V sytem can realistically defend against.
