    UK Airport email scam

    Hi there

    this obviously could have been a big problem -- although it would seem to me a pretty obvious scam -- however so many people are very lax when it comes to email type scams I'm hardly surprised though.

    I don't have any security on my phone other than what android provides. I haven't been to an airport in 10 years but I do occasionally use public WiFi, should I have some AV installed?

    @swarfega

    This type of scam isn't really preventable by any AV system -- bogus email / phishing yet it still seems to catch zillions of otherwise supposedly intelligent people out unawares --fake Gov websites (in any country) offering refunds etc etc by email I would have thought so obvious scams that people would be used to them by now.

    Some people never learn though .........

    I was thinking of in general. Do you have any AV on your phone?

    Hi there
    I don't bother with AV on phones -- I'm not a huge email / internet surfer on phone -- only use for contactless payments in pubs etc -- these are small amounts of money so easily checkable if payments go astray etc.

    On computers I only use WD on W10 and nothing on Linux systems -- I do have Router firewall enabled (it's so much better than the software ones although I just leave Windows firewall as standard ) Do check router logs regularly -- I can't understand how when people posting in this section riddle their computer with so many variations of (generally) 3rd party useless AV software and yet fail ever to look at the router logs --or even undertand that routers do have a firewall and decent logs --even "el cheapo" domestic routers !!!!

    I don't do anything nefarious on my phone but you never know with websites if some might be hijacked.

    Hi there

    Hi @swarfega

    That's where "Brain" comes in handy -- AV software can't really help you against "fake websites" - especially if they are "properly crafted" and some can look quite professional too.

    Some sort of future decent AI (Artificial Intelligence) algorithm might help -- it would have to have some way of knowing what was real and what was fake -- and would have to regularly build up a dynamic database - however this is well beyond what current AV software alledges to protect against as we are now entering the area of Human behaviour rather than just technical solutions for things like malware and malevolent modifications to an OS.

    This is why I think a lot of so called "Computer security experts" aren't doing their jobs properly as far as ordinary consumer grade systems are involved -- 99% of the problem lies with Individuals and scams rather than technical "malware" these days.

    Note I'm not talking about commercial cloud servers, corporate systems or people malevolently trying to hack into specific countries Infrastructure to cause mass chaos etc -- Computer security is still vital for those things and increasingly so.

    Cheers

    I don't click on anything obvious but sometimes you cannot tell in advance.
