    Dick - If it's some type of malware that can't be completely cleaned, I wouldn't recommend it.

    Malware can hide in many places that the In-place might not overwrite.

    FWIW.
    That's possible, yes. But both Bree and you stated it's most likely a practical joke, hence my suggestion. Have to let the OP decide his next course of action.

    Hi,
    Win-10 is impossible to hack I've read with the awesome windows defender features so that is fake news.

    That is 100% FALSE. Any operating system can be hacked if someone knows what they are doing.

    Hi there

    @ThrashZone

    AFAIK the only computer system that has still been known not to be hacked (from the outside -- anybody can hack a computer if they can get local access to the hardware of course) was IBM's mainframe MVS/ESA system with a facility known as RACF (Resource access control facility).

    Of course the System Programmer (These days I think called System administrator) or equivalent can always if they are on site add hooks etc into the system at OS install time or upgrade time (in those days called "System Generation" ) but that's not really "hacking" in conventional terms.

    Other non mainframe systems including Linux have been hacked - especially networked computers etc . Of course some systems are much harder to attack than others -- most Linux flavours for example --however Windows 10 is rapidly upping its game in that area.

    Things like 3rd party (especially free) AV software and things like Malwarebytes absolutely not needed on home computers running W10 any more for 99.999% of users -WD is perfectly good now-- it's falling prey to scams, fraud, identity theft etc that are much more likely to cause problems these days.

    Take clean backups regularly -- and if you do get a virus restore clean backup -- don't trust any so called "infection removers". It's also much quicker to do a clean restore and 100% reliable too.

    Cleansing an infected computer (i.e you are using an infected machine !!! is like being a Pilot, getting into a knowningly defective plane and have to fix it while it's in the air !!!!!!

    Cheers

    If we're real here; hackers wouldn't write that your system has been "hacked", unless they want you to click on some link for personal or monetary access, e.g ransomware. If a RAT is being used, they would lay there in silent and gather as much personal information - such as passwords, ID and bank details - as possible and get out without the user knowing it. To me this is clearly a prank of some sort. I would start asking your friends, neighbours and co-workers/school mates.

    Well, @odetowatch13 has not yet been back to read any of our replies. Perhaps the joke is on us after all?
