I have usually downloaded and run MS Malicious Software Removal Tool each month per Update directions. Recently I found out about MS Safety Scanner (msert.exe), and read somewhere that it is superior to MSRT, and should be used instead.
Can anyone shed any light on this pair of seemingly similar tools, and make recommendations?

Probably should dump both and use adwcleaner or mbam free full scan with root kits added for better detection.
Don't bother with those -- in any case who ever gets rootkit infection on basic Home computers these days doing perfectly "Normal" activities. WD on Windows 10 works perfectly well. Note here I'm referring to basic home computers not corporate or national networks / infrastructure which is a much more tasty target these days for hackers etc.
As I keep saying a lot of the virus and malware paranoia for basic home systems is so last (20) century -- it's SCAMS, IDENTITY THEFT, FRAUD and other "Get Rich Quick" schemes that you need to protect yourself against these days.
WD especially since it's updated almost daily (no 3rd party AV supplier can keep up with the number of Windows build releases coming out at the moment -- and why would they if they think another build is only a few weeks down the line) is absolutely perfectly OK for Home computers - and if you take clean backups regularly and take basic sensible precautions when using the internet then you don't need any of this stuff -- the consumer end of the AV market IMO only survives on paranoia as it's well passed its sell by date in C21 for Windows.
People are their own worst enemy at times -- I was in London's Kings Cross Railway station recently --where I saw (and heard) a typical loud mouthed mobile phone user with a Boot camp training seargents voice yelling his credit card number and the code into his phone -- pity I didn't buy something with that info !!!!!!!!
I'm sure giving out too much info whether on social media, by email or yelling into mobile phones at Railway stations etc is much more of a problem than an old "Mom and Pop" home computer wondering about and taking preventative measurements about rootkits -- grossly overkill !!!
Wasn't it some US president who got it right by saying "It's not fear that's the problem it's the fear of fear itself" !!
