Windows 10 Pro 64Bit has encrypted my files using EFS and can no longe

    Hello,

I have found that some files on an external backup drive have all been encrypted using EFS which I never wanted! Windows 10 Pro 64 bit seems to have done this and I have no idea how.

I recently decided on a fresh install of Windows 10 using recovery drive on my Laptop. I have a HP Envy laptop (ah0003na), Bit locker was enabled on a full drive encryption but I don't suspect Bit locker would have done this? When I have previously copied files to the external HDD I use robocopy, this has always worked fine and I could use the files on different PCS, but for some reason yesterday it ended up encrypting a bunch of files and I can no longer access them I copied some manually and some using robocopy, I have no recovery key for EFS, I do have the Bit locker recovery key.

My new installation does not have Bitlocker enabled, is there anyway to get these files backup. How have these files become encrypted?

Every file has a padlock icon on it.

I think I may know how this has happened, I think the Backups folder on my external HDD had the EFS checked and every file in there is encrypted, the recovery key was also backed up, but err that's only now encrypted and I am unable to open it

Anyway of getting this back? Gonna see if I created extra copy on my desktop PC, but if I created same username/password would that work?

Hi and welcome to the forum

The information in the thread I will link to is somewhat old but there might be some ideas on how and where to start trying to get this sorted out:
How to open EFS encrypted files on an HDD that came from Windows XP?

Hopefully, others can also jump in and offer advice.
