Downloading Avast Free Being Blocked ?

    Hello,

Tried, several times, to download and install the free version of Avast.
Thought it would be a good idea, even though I have Windows Defender running.

    Won't let me download it.
Msg that: this filecouldn't be downloaded.

Apparently, Windows Defender is blocking it. Although it might be something else, of course.

Can't see any way of telling it (Windows Defender) to allow it.

How do I allow it to be downloaded, please ?

When I just downloaded it I got avast_free_antivirus_setup_online.exe which is most likely a stub that then download the full Avast. Since I don't want anything to do with Avast I won't go any further.

Are you able to get the above file at least?

Why do you want it? Windows Defender is perfectly capable of protecting your system.

I downloaded the online setup and ran it. Installed successfully...

I don't want it either, so after testing I reverted the VM I used for the test to it's checkpoint I made before testing.

    Hi,

    Finally got it to work.
Just took a very, very, long time to connect with their Server, apparently.

Much thanks for all the comments.

BTW: I always thought that AVAST (free) was a really good and safe one to use.
Apparently some folks don't like or want it.

    Why ?

They have been on a recent acquisitions spree, buying other software companies, including CCleaner. unfortunately they decided to hide installs of their AV software in the installers of other products, these would load without the users knowledge or permission, even if the user specifically chose not to install or had an alternative AV in place.

I think this is now less common in their installers, but we do not know for certain, and once a security company lose user trust there is a long road to recovery

Nothing against Avast in particular, it's just that Defender seems to give the same protection as all the rest in independent tests.

    Test antivirus software for Windows 10 - February 2019 | AV-TEST

I see little point in using any 3rd-party AV. In addition, it's been reported before that Features Updates to the next Windows 10 version may fail with some AVs installed. Often an update for the 3rd-party AV will be needed before an upgrade will succeed. No such problems with Defender.

After using Avast Free close to 20 years, Started using Avast Free in January 2006,

I'm finding the amount of ads with current versions, the issues when applying Windows updates at times to be not really worth the time and aggrvation When Windows Defender provides same proection according to Independent tests.

Of course up to each individual to choose which security program meets there needs for there computer system

Intrusive, comes with notifications, hard to remove, slow down the machine, populates the Windows registry heavily, disturbs Defender, WU and desktop environment stability.

Defender too is free and mature enough to be alone.

Avast GUI can be disabled and by that all notifications, most likely ADs too.
The only downsize is, that in order to do it, the self-protection has to be disabled.
