I ended up simply copying the old drive onto the new drive using Macrium, and it all works perfectly. It was the easiest, least painful choice for me to try. I told her she needs to back up all her data files, maybe using google desktop client to google drive, and set it up automatically. She now has a 500gb Sandisk Ultra 3D SSD, it boots in about 7 seconds. Everything is so much faster. I cant imagine ever using a spinning disk was a good choice for this notebook pc from the get go..
