If you open task management goto startup it tells you what impact each program has on start. Have you checked disk for errors? Problem is often down to 5000 spin speed of he with SSD load time should be about 15 seconds
it does not have a SSD, it has a spinning disk 1 TB in size AFAIK. No one has done a thing to the PC from factory.
I will try the check disk in safe mode, which I have not done, and try the defender too again which it said was no errors.

Thing is, 6 months ago, my daughter said it worked ok, then it just got worse and worse, when I got it here, it was so slow as to be unusable. Is the disk drive failing, is there a test for it?

Chkdsk is finding errors, it is at 10% now.

Windows does not warn you to chkdsk for errors when there are problems? Did windows even know there is a problem?

Chkdsk is still at 10%. I suppose it could take a while? Does it ever just quit and cant fix the drive?

    Hello sdowney717:

For the progress percentage to stick at 10% or 11% is normal and quite likely you have entered the chkdsk parameters for the five (5) stage task as opposed to the quicker three (3) stage process. If so, the last 2 of 5 stages are particularly lengthy but necessary for a thorough cleanup of a suspect hard disk drive. The key here is to have patience with the process.

If it sticks at certain percentage that normally were the error is most likley bad block it may then speed up when it reaches no errors. I hope you told it to fix make sure to view log at the end once its written blocks as bad it will skip them so any test after it wont show. Most drive have up to 5 years warrenty now

/f /r /x parameters were used. So it is fixing it if it can.
    Interesting idea about a warantee.
Is there a way to save the chkdsk log?

The chkdsk log will be saved. Option Two in this tutorial will read the latest log.

its still horrible and slow. I came into room and saw the main screen with no login. nothing would bring up the login so i powered off. then i logged in and it is super slow as before. the only time it was decent was in safe mode. I am typing on it now. No one would want to use this pc like this.

trying to open event viewer. I ran this several minutes ago. then it came up.
