    KIS Total v Defender

My Kaspersky Total Security 2019 runs out end May but they want nearly double what I paid last time, so shopping around.

I know everyone has preferences but what I am looking at is Effectiveness/Price/Users. Those that I have looked at are comparable in price to KIS, and some more expensive. On principle I want to tell Kaspersky to go away. McAfee gives multi user licence but at a cost of approx £89 a year; Kaspersky want £120 approx for 2 years. which is almost double what I paid 2 years ago.

Final point: just how good is Microsoft Defender?

    Find out at www.avtest.org

At the end of each line in their summary results there is a > symbol you can click on to see the detailed results for each one. You might find that Windows Defender looks to be slightly behind some others because it has been marked down for, say, slower installations [which I think they have over-weighted in their processing because installations happen infrequently].

If you remove KIS then check their website for any KIS removal tool that ensures remnants are not left behind.

Cheers Denis, I forgot about the uninstall tool, timely reminder. Regarding tests, I am reminded that F Secure is a freebie from my bank, at l;east first year I think.

F-secure is notorious with false positives, and it's not what it used to be.

Check again AV-test.org - latest home user test

And if you buy something, go for discount...you can get good offers.

Windows Defender is a freebie from Windows 10. At least for the supported lifetime of your hardware.

The latest AVTest results show that F-Secure has overcome its false positives problems. But I haven't got excited about any of them since Windows defender became a decent utility [early last year or 2017, I think it was].

I used to get a free licence from my bank for KIS but that was stopped due to security concerns (Kaspersky is a Russian firm).

I now just use Defender augmented by offline scans by AdwCleaner and Malwarebytes. I've had no problems.

Thanks guys, I have less than 30 days remaining on my 10 machine package (I only use 5) so was thinking of not renewing and going for 5 machine version. But, in light of the above info, am looking through the above links. I have discounted the symantec one, its an intro offer and I would get lemoned in 12 months.

I would like to pose one question that you must answer to yourself before you take any further action - "Why have anything other than Windows Defender?"
