    Sorry if I missed it but have you tried resetting all Security and all Group Policies just in cae there is some corruption in them ?

    Yes, I've tried everything at this point, short of the dreaded RESET. However, I've decided I need to get the ball moving. As soon as I send this response I'm heading off to do a reset. Wish me luck.

    Hallo!

    Why don't you try to install Kaspersky AV (the 30-days trial) as a test.
    Kaspersky should disable all configs of old AV and maybe reset some of the broken settings.
    Use Kaspersky for a day (full update and maybe a full scan, pay attention what he find, maybe some false-positives that you do not want to delete), uninstall it and see if your Defender come back to life as it should be.

    Hi - I caught your suggestion just before I started a 'Reset' of the computer. Sounded like a good idea but unfortunately it didn't work in my case. Thanks for the suggestions.
