It's the EFI boot system that contains recovery partitions, an EFI partition, and the C partition. The computer is only a year old. When I encrypt it with Bitlocker it slows down my CPU by 3-5%, my video card falls by over 5-8%. So I want to try Veracrypt. I know it's not the encryption slowing down my machine, but Bitlocker seems to be changing a setting somehow that puts a ceiling on my video card and cpu performance. Once I restore the machine, reset the TPM, the machine performs very well.

Good luck. Would be interested in your findings.

I was encrypting data that I took out of house but stopped.

I know the benefits of encrypting but I'm leary of whole system encryption.

After a hard reset, my computer benched at the 75th percentile. After encrypting it with Veracrypt it dropped to the 36th percentile. I de-crypted it, and re-encrypted it using Bit locker 128 bit encryption. With Bitlocker it still only places at 46th, which is in the middle. It's still a fast little computer for my needs. My 2012 Dell and 2006 Gateway are both encrypted with Bitlocker, yet show no decrease in speed when bench marked, just my 2017 Acer slows down. All 3 have full drive encryption.

Very strange that my older computers retain their speed after encryption, but the newer one slows down.

So not sure how new is new but would any BIOS updates to fix Specter and Meltdown possibly be slowing down newer device.

Older devices would not have the same BIOS retrofits.

    For sure a WAG.

Did it get a BIOS update to deal with Specter. That would have been just before the news broke so I would think they did create a BIOS patch.

I see Acer has a bios update for Meltdown and Specter. I have no idea if I have the update, and I know nothing about updating a bios. They have 8 updates for my bios.

Click start, type System Information, app should come to top of list, click.

When it opens you will notice a line for BIOS version, in my case 1801. All vendors use their own numbering scheme.

I believe way back some people reported some slow downs when they installed Specter patch as that ability to guess next instruction was reduce.

As to updating your BIOS, if your machine is running fine leave it alone. There is some risk to updating a BIOS as you may "Brick" your machine. Brick as in it turns into a building brick. Not all MB's all equal. Some allow you to recover. At some point you maybe forced to update BIOS for system stability issues.

The trick when updating a BIOS is read instructions carefully, be very patient (very), and ensure electrical supply is sound. Don't do it when lights might flicker. I use a UPS.

Usually on the site the vendor site there will be instructions and maybe even a tool. My Asus has instructions within manual and within BIOS there is a tool. Some vendors provide tools within your system and they are supposed to update drivers and BIOS.
