Avast Free, Malwarebytes Free (been running this setup since 2006 on all systems), nice and light it feels, scan times for weekly full scans really fast, versus Defender that takes 6-12 hours to do 1 SSD, and 1TB storage drive, on my Intel I7 7700 Desktop and 7700HQ Laptop
Who knows i might try Defender again when 1903 launches and clean installs done on the systems, Unless i buy a newer SSD for Desktop for birthday in 1 day, and do my clean install sooner, but right now Defender seems slow, very long scan times, and such
Laptop might wait til 1903 launches
Windows Defender is mostly fine for regular use, but I find its performance to be highly hit and miss. Don't matter if you have got a hefty cpu, it may run like crap on it for no known reason.
With Windows Defender you might have these beautiful scenarios (or not):
+ Slow scanning speeds.
+ Slow copying of files (slow copying files while on network/NAS).
+ Slow display of executables icons (when browising a folder full of programs).
+ Slow installing of programs.
+ Interface/UI is clumsy sometimes.
On the bright side:
+ It is well integrated with Operating System.
+ It is really FREE. It won't never nag you to get paid options or get premium features.
+ Usually small footprint on system resources.
+ It is automatically updates withing WU.
+ Barely noticeable because it likes to work behind the scenes.
Hello Gents.
As the original poster I thought I'd do an update.
So far "Kaspersky" has gone and I am running Windows defender constantly and an occasional run of Malwarebytes.
I seem to be running ok but that causes me to wonder IF all is well as I get very little notification of any stopped viruses etc.
Of course this may well be true as I try to keep on the straight and narrow, ideally I want to be sure that if something has imbedded itself onto a site I do visit that windows defender will nail it.
Is there a test program that I can run to check out the efficiency of windows defender?
So far all is well long may it continue.

You can use this to make sure, that everything is properly setup in WD. For additional setup:
ConfigureDefender: Utility for configuring Windows 10 built-in Defender antivirus settings.
I tried the first link but Defender didn't block the Cloud Delivered Protection & Block at First Sight Tests despite Defender being correctly configured.
The files downloaded were validatecloud.exe and wdtestfile.exe. Defender gave no error on trying to open each file and a scan of each file was clean. Malwarebytes did classify vlaidatecloud.exe as JokeTool.Agent and offered to quarantine it.
I uploaded wdtestfile.exe to virustotal.com and only 23/71 virus engines reported a problem.
Are these tests still valid?
