System blocking admin user from updating Controlled Folder Access

On a Windows 10 Home 64 bit PC, which I purchased directly from HP and which only I have access to, I wanted to turn on Controlled Folder Access and then customize the list of folders.

I logged into the Admin user, and went into Windows Security settings. When I clicked on Virus & Threat Protection (to get to the Controlled Folder Access settings), I got a popup entitled "Page Not Available". The popup text reads, "Your IT Administrator has limited access to some areas of this app, and the item you tried to access is not available. Contact IT helpdesk for more information."

Anyone have an idea what this means and how I can get around it?

    Thank you, all.

Are you running Windows Defender as the primary antivirus?

Do you have other real-time antivirus or anti-malware solutions running?

I have Norton Security and Windows Defender

Thank you, Rubi, for your quick response.

I have Norton Security and Windows Defender. They generally work together well. Is there some Norton setting I must adjust?

    Hi,

I have never used Norton and could not say. But, it might be worth temporarily disabling Norton protection (there should be an option either in the main interface or by right clicking in the taskbar icon).

Once disabled, try accessing the Controlled Folder section again and see if you are able to do so.

If yes, then we know what the problem was but if not then I hope others on the forum can also offer suggestions as to what the issue might be.

You shouldn't be running 2 anti-virus at the same time, I would uninstall Norton and then try to turn on Controlled Folders.

Thanks, Digmor Crusher. I think I'll keep Norton running because it's generally considered a much more robust anti-malware package than Windows Defender.

I did try to temporarily disable Norton Auto-Protect, Norton Firewall, and Norton Product Security Protection. That didn't help: I still got the same message.

Controlled Folder Access required Windows Defender real-time protection to be running - which it isn't because you are using Norton. If you want Controlled Folder Access you'll have to remove Norton as your AV.

Not "generally" at all. You can compare them using www.av-test.org

    They generally work together well
They might be competing for resources behind the scenes.
They might be fighting for access to elements that, as a result, don't get properly checked by either of them.
Who knows? I don't. I don't know anybody who could know.
