Disabling Virus Protection Prog's That Came with New HP pc ?

Hello,

Hope i didn't ask this previously, but if I did, i can't find
the Post anywhere. If so, I apologize, and will blame
it on old-age now.

Son has a new HP W10 pc.

He would like to run it with Windows Defender, but apparently Windows Defender
won't run if there are other virus protection programs running (or just installed even ?).

True ?

If so, how would he go about disabling, or better yet totally deleting all of them
(probably McAfee) ?

General Question: Windows Defender usually considered "adequate" protection ?
Is it "pretty good" these days ?

Using McAfee Consumer Product Removal Tool
· Double click the MCPR.exe
· A Command Line window will be displayed, and then close automatically.
· Wait for a second Command Line window to be displayed. Note: Do not double-click MCPR.exe again, you may have to wait up to 1 minute for the next window to appear.
· After the second window appears, the program will begin the cleanup.
· Observe the installation, which could take several minutes. The following message will be displayed in the Command Line window: The machine must reboot to complete the un-installation. Reboot now? [y.n]
· Press Y on the keyboard.
· Wait for the computer to restart.
· All McAfee products are now removed from your computer.

I'll add, if McAfee hasn't been activated yet don't do it, just uninstall using method above without activating it. If activated you also should have no problems uninstalling using their removal tool.

Defender will provide good protection on W10.

WD is perfectly fine - you don't need anything else on W10 these days even Malwarebytes which lot still use won't bring anything extra to the table. (If you run professional / Office / corporate LAN's then that's a different issue - security is a must -- this discussion is specifically for HOME machines).

However never rely on old AV reports -- they are out of date even before they are written (just think how many WD definitions have been done by standard Windows update in Dec and Jan alone !!!!!!). People also use computers in so many different ways that a decent universal test is pretty well unobtainable.

For Home computers you don't need any 3rd party AV - WD is jus fine -- all the other stuff was developed in the days of W7 etc when Windows was really leaky and hackers abounded -- today scamming is the name of the game - you are unliklely to get hacked but could easily get scammed - that's where care needs to be taken. The sorts of places where you could pick up nasty programs / malware etc tend to be blocked -- and if you have enough knowlege to get round the block then you know enough about computers not to get hacked or pick up viruses etc. The name of the game is making money -- Bank / Credit card fraud, identity theft, fake emails, clone "look alike" websites etc.

True, but AV-Test have been running these test every two months and you can leaf back through their archive of results. Defender has been scoring virtually the same as the likes of Avast and AVG throughout 2018.
