Does Win 10 need an antivirus

All of the antivirus software products will have:

false positives
false negatives
true positives
true negatives
accuracy

The antivirus software always have updates.
So the comparison of one antivirus software to another is always a moving target.

One is better than another this month and worse the next month.

I've been using Windows defender with malwarebytes.

Windows defender is fine for protection of virus and trojan.

It seems to be weak for PUP as malwarebytes and its sister software adwcleaner seem to find then when windows defender misses them.

For home users PUA (aka PUP) detection is not enabled, but for business customers it is enabled. Home users can enable it for further protection.

I have been moving between AVAST Free and WD. Right now using WD because you can run into issues with any 3rd party AV.

Hi there

The operative words in your post are : "used ...for ages".

The whole nature of A/V has changed - the name of the game isn't hacking small home computers but scamming people and Windows itself has had the whole nature of the way it handles protection totally changed.

Those old 3rd party AV products - especially the free ones -- were necessary a few years ago when Windows had more holes in it than a sieve and it was "in or hip" to do hacking. Now it's regarded as passe and scamming for money is the thing people are doing now - so attempts to get into bank accounts, passwords, identity theft etc etc. None of this stuff is even remotely preventable by AV software -- some AI (Artificial intelligence) software might do in helping to stop users giving out too much detail or other ways in tracking how they use their machines - but that hasn't been written yet and would be legitimate software in any case.

Personally WD on a home computer is more than enough especially if you take regular backups.

I would certainly be interested in decent AI (Artificial Intelligence) software -- this is where effort should be concentrated rather than worrying about silly old fashioned hacking threats which aren't really a problem any more provided you USE BRAIN and have WD enabled properly.

Note - I'm referring to individual HOME computers of course --if you run public domains / servers / websites / forums / businesses / e-commerce etc then it's another issue completely.

These types of things will require a much more robust approach to not only internal security but customer data, continuity of service etc.

For this type of stuff a proper enterprise strength package should be used as well as a good security policy.

Typical 3rd pary consumer grade products - free or otherwise are unlikely to cut it in this scenario -- a full blown I.T security admin would probably be needed in these cases.

Once i'm used to Defender, and get my backups going more regularly i think i'll be fine. Several years ago back in 2005 i was an offical tester for WIndows Live One Care, well listened to some friends in another PC game, and went to a site shouldn't have, and severely infected that old PC.

After that switched to Avast Free January 2006 til 1/20/2019 when i removed it from Main Desktop, So far defender seems to be working ok for most part, though i'm sure after a future clean install i might even have a better experience at least on the Intel I7 systems (Desktop and Intel I7 based laptop), Not sure how it will perform on Mom's AMD A6-3620 system with Hard drive though as yet

Overall though happy with system performance thus far

Panda Dome Free tends to slow down some tasks sometimes. Maybe it got fixed on newer releases.
