Does Win 10 need an antivirus

    Hi all,

I've recently installed Win 10 x64. It has Windows Defender which is a built-in anti virus as you know. Now my question is, do I need to install another Anti virus too? If yes, what do you recommend please?
And will that new one work alongside with the built-in windows Defender?

    Thanks in advance.

Most of the time Defender will protect you well enough but it does depend on your usage pattern and what you do in Windows.

If all you do is email (no clicking on spurious attachments), browsing safe websites and gaming then you should be ok. However if you live on the edge then getting a paid for antivirus might be a consideration.

Well, I think I mostly am on the safe side in terms of using the Internet and Web as well. But At times I may (un)deliberately click on something harmful for the machine. So having a better anti virus is not that wrong.
What anti virus do you recommend please?

If possible offer more than one in priority order, please?
I hope there is at least a great and free one!

One side question: What do you think of Kasperky Internet Security?
Honestly and frankly speaking, when I hear some product's name of Russia, my mind straightly thinks of "spying"!
With complete respect to the people of that area.

My vote goes to ESET, but you have to pay for it after the trial. It's worth every penny.

I second that recomendation @simrick. I've used it for about 15 years with no problems whatsoever. It's also very light on resources where as to me Windows Defender seems to slow my system down a bit.

    Hi there.

WD is 100% OK for home users especially on latest releases of windows builds (1803 and 1809) -- nothing else adds anything extra -- they are IMO just snake oil. Those programs were written for C20 (last century's) problems and also before windows had any sort of sensible mechanism built into it.

The name of the game in C21 is not hacking some home computer any more - but MAKING SERIOUS MONEY with things like identity theft, fraud, movement of money to wrong bank accounts, "look alike" websites purporting to offer you tax refunds, emails with dubious attachements and the like -- I.E SCAMS which no AV software can defend you against. Even Ransomware doesn't have to be a problem --just power off computer immediately (don't do a controlled shutdown), remove internet and any external devices and simply restore from a bootable clean restore image (Macrium etc).

For corporates who need to defend against cloud attacks, Dos (denial of service) and data about customers accounts / credit card numbers etc it's another issue but for HOME computers WD is more than adequate. I'll bet 99% of people on this Forum haven't had any virus problems with computers in the last 6 - 7 months unless downloading illegal software / music from well known pirate sites and even those places are cleaning up their act since cheap legal streaming reduces the number of users on the site and hence the advertising / revenue.

Remember in 2019 it's making Money that's the new game in town -- infecting old mom and pop home computers isn't "hip" any more when serious money can be made in other ways so easily.

    Cheers

A full time daily backup plan, plus Malwarebytes for Windows Premium, plus ESET's NOD32 has always been an effective defense system.

Add to those, reasonably effective security extensions for your browser(s) and practice safe Hex.

Make certain your Windows system and applications are up-to-date.

Practice "Attack Surface Reduction" where possible.

At least become aware of all popularized attack vectors and exploits.
