2 Antivirus Subscriptions from 2 different accounts: Which one is best

I have CenturyLink as my Internet Service Provider and DISH as my Cable TV provider.

Both companies offer virus protection. CenturyLink offers Norton and DISH offers Webroot SecureAnywhere.

I know and realize that this has been asked numerous times before.

But which antivirus program do you recommend? Norton or Webroot?

Thanks for your suggestions and help!

Haven't used Norton since Symantec acquired them but have worked with Webroot, seems pretty good. The main issue is not to have 2 or more such programs installed and running at the same time, could, and usually does, as they implement things differently. Installing would not be too big a problem if wanting to close one and run the other manually just to avoid problems. A third-party install should disable Windows Defender running in the background.

See www.avtest.org to help you compare them. There would be nothing wrong with rejecting both & sticking with Windows defender.

The latest test results are on https://www.av-test.org/en/antivirus/home-windows/ When you look at each set of 3 scores, look a bit to the right and click on the > symbol to see the details for that line, You might decide, for example, that WD's current major shortcoming is of little concern [slower installations].

Windows Defender has improved in the recent years. And, not only Windows Defender protection, but in future builds, there is this extra security feature called Exploit Protection, Virtualization based Security, Core Isolation, and Memory Integrity protection.

In other words, you not only get protection from Windows Defender, but you will get more extra layered security as above mentioned.

    Hi there

for HOME (not corporate) computers my view is that WD is more than sufficient and anything else is either just snake oil, unnecessary resource consumption and often fail with the number of updates and new builds that windows has currently. Not only as WD improved but the whole nature of hacking / infection has changed dramatically . Most of the AV software is still thinking in C20's terms (last century) -- modern hacking is totally different -- they want to make money - no point in just hosing up a computer for the sake of it.

The name of the game is making money and that's done by scamming usually and no AV system will protect you against a lot of those scams e.g fake websites, bogus emails offering you tax refunds etc etc.

So surf safely, don't give out too much private info on social media sites and if you do download music etc from torrents only download recognized music formats etc - don't download .exe, /.zip, .rar files.

In any case comparative reports are essentially useless -- everybody has different ways of using a computer and if a new threat appears at any time the report is then out of date of course.

Note my remarks are for HOME computer users -- corporate and cloud systems face different challenges of course and professional protection and security is required of course.

    Cheers

They are both quality products, pick whichever you like (GUI, etc). Webroot might be lighter though.

I think I am just going to stay with Norton. I have used Norton for years. I will let CenturyLink protect my PC's with Norton and DISH cover them if something were to happen to them. I have the DISH Protect Platinum plan that covers our devices such as PC's, TV's, tablets and iPads, etc.

Like mentioned in my post, among the other extra layered security besides Windows Defender, there is Exploit Guard, Core Isolation, and Memory Integrity. These added layers of security in Win10, should enhance the protection being offered by Windows Defender. If your system hardware supports these features.

Also, very important, that don't use your daily tasks as an Admin account. Use a local Standard Account. This is perhaps the number one most security approaches that must be taken.

Update your Browser Add-Ons for IE, Chrome, or other browsers
And update Windows and other software that goes online.

People are just flooding their machines with junk security programs. By following the above simple steps, then you should be fine. Its your computer, so use whatever security program you like.

I've been using Webroot for over 7 years on my laptop, and two desktop computers. Webroot has never let an infection or intrusion attempt thru yet. Impeccable security. It never slows my computers down like Norton has done, Norton is free thru Comcast. I'd rather pay $20 per year for Webroot, and forget it's even there, unless something gets on my computer. Webroot destroys the threat, plus, Webroot can rollback encryption attempts by ransomware attacks.

It is very important to have internet security in layers.

I use Norton Security, carefully configured to my needs. Windows Defender is also good.
Choose one of the above and add Malwarebytes Free...

    Products and pricing | Malwarebytes

Do not have them run together at boot, but on demand.

    Example -

Norton Security is your main AV and FW - boots with Windows. It will automatically disable Defender upon install.
MBAM is used to double check a file, on demand, or scan your system. Does not boot with Windows.

In this case the two will not interfere.

    Another quick online tool -

    VirusTotal

Great for a third opinion on a file or files.

    Hope this helps you.
