How is it possible for this software to read all my stored passwords??

My brother found this on his C drive opened it and freaked out, all of his browser passwords were visible.
    download link:
WebBrowserPassView - Recover lost passwords stored in your Web browser
Windows Defender erases the file upon download.

It is one of many Professional small applications provided by a specialist developer Nir Sofer - these applets are not really for general use by beginners, but in the correct trained hands can "save" a system from the need to be re-installed with the potential loss of user data.

Yes, some of the applets could be used for less than honest purposes, but that is true with any tool, [You could do a lot of damage with a Hammer and chisel, or you could create a sculpture], the user has to decide.

many browsers will flag the applets as malware or remove the downloads due to the power of the applications, they are aimed at solving specific issues, by those that understand the issue and the tools

Microsoft have their own set of similar tools Sysinternals which do some of the same things but not all, and this is not flagged by any Microsoft Browser.

I cannot know how the application came to be on the system although it can be included in other toolkits and support systems, so that is a possibility.

Only the user can decide to use this type of tool, and if you have any doubt as to its use or potential issues incorrect use may cause I would strongly suggest that it is not used

Some malware use Nirsoft tools like DarkGate, so AVs mark them as dangerous. But the problem are not those tools, but that browsers store passwords unencrypted by default. Malware could steal passwords, even if they are encrypted, by stealing hashes. It is better to use a password manager.

Obviously, I have no issues with the developer, only with Windows and the browsers allowing it.
