Can't find Defender Real-time Protection toggle

I want to install WD diagnostic software but Defender won't let me. I see no option to run the file as admin.
I have been looking for the option to turn off Real-time Protection under Windows Security->Virus&threat protection. The only option I see is Periodic scanning on/off.

the option to turn off Real-time Protection
    - it won't be there as you have Avast installed - that's your real time AV.

    Defender won't let me
    - is there an informative message? If so, please quote it exactly. Thanks.

Even with Avast installed, Defender still runs.

Starting with the Windows 10 Anniversary Update in the Summer of 2016, Windows Defender can actually run alongside another antivirus app. When you install another app, Windows Defender itself isn’t disabled—just its real-time protection component is. That means your third-party app handles real-time protection, but you can still run a manual scan with Defender whenever you want.

So how can I disable Defender?

Anyway, I found a way to run the .exe.Can't find Defender Real-time Protection toggle-screenshot-50-.jpg

    You said:

    - which is exactly what I said. Defender is not responsible for real time protection.

The message you've helpfully posted is about Smartscreen (as it says). You can unblock items filtered by Smartscreen.

Have you tried clicking 'More info'?

My point is that Defender is still running, as also evidenced by occasional popup messages that happen while Avast is running.

Windows Defender Smartscreen sounds to me like a Defender component - one that is running.

The jargon 'real-time protection' does not help elucidate, since I have no clue what type of protection there is that is not in real time.

I suppose Defender cannot be disabled altogether.

As I said, I found how to run the file.

    Thanks.

Thank you so much for your reply.

Since you object to any messages from Defender apparently, and can't distinguish real-time protection from Defender's Smartscreen and other features intended to protect you, you may wish to try one of the internet guides such as

Please use a search engine such as Google and search for e.g.
