Hello, I have a 4 day old new HP computer and I want to run Windows Defender. I had a free trial version of McAfee. I uninstalled McAfee using their uninstaller. Windows Defender antivirus wont start. I get a message: "unexpected error. sorry, we ran into a problem please try again."
Welcome to the forum. Did you just use windows to remove it or did you goto Mcafee website and get there removal tool?
Samuria, I did both. I used the windows uninstall first and then downloaded the Mcafee uninstall tool and ran that.
Are you signed in as local or ms account is there another account you can try with?

Just reset win-10 since it's new.
I'm afraid to. I just installed office 2010, which took 2 days to validate and I have moved over 150gb of data from my old computer. A reset would discard this?
Defender will not turn on or work if there are residual files from McAfee still on the computer. Since it is a new computer you should be able to download a 30-day free trial of Revo Uninstaller Pro. Sometimes Windows itself does not completely remove all traces of a program. Revo does a great job at completely removing programs and other apps. You can also go into the registry and search for any leftover McAfee files, right click and delete. I used Revo to get rid of all the bloatware when I first bought my laptop, but when the trial ended I found the free version of Iobit Uninstaller, using the Powerful Uninstall function works just as well as Revo.
