Hi there
@jaigomes
Correct answer is "There isn't one" -- note this is not the same as don't use any.
Personally I believe provided you use the internet sensibly, are aware of some of the silly scams going around these days -- designed to separate you from your money rather thana trash your machine, and take regular and CLEAN backups then Windows defender is just fine.
Keep the OS and programs on the OS / partition while all user data elsewhere is the golden rule here as well.
If you do use torrents always get native files e.g mp3 / flac / mp4 /mkv etc for audio / video -- regard any .rar,.zip,.exe type files with suspicion --these are the files that can often contain nasty payloads !!!!
An mp4 file for example won't play properly if it's infected and by using the actual audio / video program e.g VLC it won't (and probably can't infect your computer -- with archive type stuff (.rar etc) and .exe files anything can and probably will happen. !!!
Avoid also those sites that look like say Government tax rebate sites etc -- I don't know where you live but if I'm entitled to any tax rebate (could I ever be so lucky !!) the tax authorities will usually contact you by "Snail Mail" - and in any case check up via an old fashioned phone call first !!!!!!
A lot here use malwarebytes in addition to Windows defender --for myself I don't think it's necessary but read other peoples opinions too as everybody uses the internet in different ways and has diffrent applications. The main thing here is to be as "Streetwise" using the Internet as one might be going into a dodgy part of town in some dangerous city -- although visit here - safest country in the planet if you can survive the Winter OK !!!!!! (actually not to bad Finland, Sweden, Norway a lot colder).

Almost all of them including Defender are a 'TOP Product', according to the most recent tests...

I just use Defender.
Hi there
@Bree
WD is fine -- however "After the Fact" tests are not worth the paper they are printed on as a new threat can appear at any time -- even 5 secs after the report was published.
Main thing is to get a bit Streetwise in using the net -- even if some Ransomware comes up it's easily and quickly dealt with -- don't panic, just switch computer off immediately (don't power down gracefully), disconnect external HDD's and Internet and then do a stand alone restore from a clean backup -- fixed easily. !!!
W7/W8 etc needed loads of 3rd party AV software as WD was a joke -- with W10 WD is updated almost daily and works fine -- just take regular backups and you aren't likely to have any problems.
As far as the other popular option here -- Malwarebytes -- is concerned I think the jury is still out on whether that's needed any more -- for my part I think WD does just fine on its own.
For Commercial businesses / SME's etc AV protection is another issue entirely -- my remarks and posts in this thread are directed at principally HOME users or individual professional people.

That's where Defender's 'Block at first sight' comes into play....

Hi there
@Bree
I agree WD is fine
My point was that relying on reports of AV effectiveness etc is a 100% waste of time for all sorts of reasons !!!
people eventually will find ways of breaking things - the clue is never panic, restore your system and with a huge company like Ms a fix will be released within hours at the most. Ms doesn't want a zillion Windows installations to be riddled with malware etc. - It's not "The evil empire" as often posted in various places.

Forticlient - signature based company AV (no false positives), plus an unbeatable web filter.
Sure, you can add OSArmor by NoVirusThanks, plus Emergency Kit for an occasional scanning.
With all due respect to Jimbo, he proposes due diligence - which is a given... the question arises about drive-by, zero-day stuff ... WD is a good option as it blocks anything it is unsure of...
However, if you are a developer (or test stuff ) and your apps gets blocked each time you run it in user-mode, it's irritating.
I too recommend Windows Defender for users. It's safe, free, and works like a charm!
I will also mention that I personally use BitDefender for my antivirus, but this is a personal use, rather than my recommendation.
