Just got a new SSD and very impressed.
I enabled Bitlocker and the Manage-bed status shows that Bitlocker is using hardware encryption. Why is this?
SSD is a Crucial MX500 2.5 inch and the box does not even state that it’s a encrypted SSD. I am so confused.
Should I leave like this as Hardware Encryption or not?
I want to use BitLocker the way I used it before.
How can I revert this?
Never mind...There is a Group policy to disable Hardware Encryption.
So, still don’t understand as to why SSDs are Hardware Encrypted by default when Bitlocker is enabled?
Is this more secure than using Software based Bitlocker encryption?
No, Micron does not make their MX drives to be hardware encryption. It will state for the spec's of the SSD, if it is able to be encrypted through hardware. Hardware encryption is always better than software, but if you forget the key or have to reinstall Windows or change out hardware, you can be locked out of the drive.
MX series SSDs from Crucial is capable of doing hardware encryption. But it needs to be setup the correct way either using some encryption management system like BitLocker or others to secure it even more.
