Used Kaspersky Internet Security 2015 and Bitdefender Total Security 2015 for a while before going back to Norton which I've used for nearly 9 years. Lightning fast updates and a support person I can actually chat with instead of some vague distributor that Kaspersky and BD employ for tech. support in my country.

BDTS 2015 was really bad. Noticeable impact on the PC. Kaspersky and Norton performed the best.

Now NIS runs along with MBAM and MBAE.

The answer is in a form of a question . How often does your Anti-Virus tell you, you have an infection ? I know for my self maybe 4 or 5 years ago when I was high on something and wasn't paying attention to what I was doing on the net lol ... All in all I use the creator of the software who created windows and it firewall ( one vote for Microsoft )

I have been using Defender and USB Disk Security for any external media. The major protection you can have is yourself.

    The best answer is: You.

Dont count on any single program to "do it all". They still fail, occasionally. I still believe that more popular a A/V or "security" software is the more likely some hacker or virus maker has a work around or exploit to use against it. M$ cannot be counted on to plug exploits and push out fixes and update in a timely manner, unless it hits the news media, fixes could take months. M$ has a history of ignoring a lot of stuff.

In addition to my post above. Also you might want to turn off autorun even though it is convenient but it is one way for virus to sneak into your PC. This is the first thing I do after Windows Installation.

Read more about this: Is autorun really that evil, and if so, how do I turn autorun off?

One of the 1st things I did after my upgrade to Win 10 Pro, was shut off Windows defender. Never have used it to date.
I use Nortons 360 Plus, along with MalwareBytes Pro (not freeware) Also have SuperAntiSpyware Pro which is turned off and I run it manually when I feel like it. I have life time updates for both Malwarebytes and SuperAntiSpyware. because I bought them long time ago. They no longer off this package.
I have NEVER trusted Windows defender, most likely never will. :)
