    Glad you got it sorted.

Sfc /scannow may have to be run three times to fix. The inplace repair would have also refreshed your Windows but if you didn't have boot media it would have updated you to 1809. Hence my question do you have boot media.

Everyone should have a copy of the boot media for their current version so you can run the inplace repair without losing programs and apps.

It's sorted and you PC is operational, that is all that counts.

With the internet, its like playing Russian Roulette with .38 revolver. I had several websites where a pop up comes up saying your computer is infected with a virus, call the number down below to have their techs remove it. it locks me on to the website where I have to hold down the power button to exit it and reboot.

@MrHudson those are likely bad ads.

An easier way out which I found works very nicely. Right click in a clear area of the Task bar and start Task manager. Find your browser, right click and End Task. Start your browser again, if it asks do you want to recovery pages say no.

No, I would be looking something up, click the link for that website and right as it loads, pop up, Your computer is infected, please call our tech support line to uninfect your computer. I do not click on any sort of ads.

You don't have to click on ad. Ads just appear from ad servers unless you are ....

Well documented. Here is a sample.

Yes, that the pop up I get. When I get that, it wont allow me to go back. I have to hold down the power button to force shut down.

I'm not doubting you. I get called about this every three weeks.

Just try opening task manager and ending your browser.
