Windows Defender & scanning USBs/external drives.

Hello all, I’ve moved from Norton to test out WD & would like to know whether Defender automatically scans USB devices upon connecting or will auto scan the files upon accessing/opening?

    Thanks,

AFAIK ... It doesn't scan a USB device on connecting, but Real Time Protection does scan files on accessing/opening them.

Note: WD only scans connected USB devices on a Quick or Custom Scan, but not on a Full Scan. See this tutorial (Option1) to set it to scan USB devices on a Full Scan - Enable Windows Defender Scan Removable Drives in Windows 10

To test this I created a text file with the Eicar string on a USB & just as I’d saved the file Windows defender notified me of a virus, I clicked OK & then tried to open the file where Defender cleaned the ‘virus’. Tested also on a SD card with same results.
    Thanks all who replied. :)
