Mine don't happen at the times when Defender updates definitions, it happens at totally random times. Also started August 1st and only happens once a day.

I did notice this update installed on July 31st: Windows Defender Antivirus antimalware platform - KB4052623 (Version 4.18.1807.18075) Could the problem be with this update?

Edit: I reread the thread and yes, it happens at the exact same time as the Windows Defender Verification Task runs. I hate to say it but I'm glad that others have the same problem, I was about to do an in-place repair upgrade but now I realize it's either a bug or a new and idiotic feature.

Mine creates a restore point once per day too. it started August 1st. I don't have a clue what MS is up to.

Well, at least mine appears to be consistent ...

FWIW ... Both Desktop & Laptop were not being used between 7:30 - 9:30 PM

    Desktop:
Defender Task - All 4 ran & Restore Point created at 8:29 PM

    Laptop:
Defender Task - Only Verification ran & Restore Point created at 7:58 PM

Edit: The other 3 Defender Task just ran on Laptop at 9:58 PM

I checked back on the Defender updates, I found this interesting article when I clicked on the July 29th update.

I do not use cloud services, therefore, I have turned OFF the Cloud Protection in the Defender Security Centre in hopes that this may change the daily Restore points and the daily (2x 3x) bombardment of Defender definition updates.
I will advise if there are any noticeable changes with System Restore, or definition update frequency.

    Just mentioning this because...…

I did a clean install 3 or 4 days ago (latest MCT) and once installed I left it alone for 20 minutes or so for any apps and so on to do their thing. I then paused Windows update (Pro version with this option). At this point Defender has not updated and has some daft date showing such as Jan 01/01/01 for its definitions, however it reports all is up to date. Odd.

If you now run a manual update check for Defender definitions they install correctly. What happens next is that the first automatic check (such as after a restart) fails with a warning that some required service or other is not running. Whatever the problem is it self corrects and from then on all updates are correct. I have proved this behaviour on two separate installs. The first automatic Defender update fails when Windows Update is paused following a clean install.

Main Windows updates are still paused. No CU installed as yet.

Well after turning off Cloud protection Defender performed it's maintenance "Periodic Maintenance and cleanup tasks and left it's calling card in System Restore. I give up, it's obvious Redmond are up to something but why the secret. I It just seems strange that whatever they are up to requires a daily automatic restore point.

Think I might have stumbled across a way to stop Defender Verification Task / Windows Modules Installer from creating Restore Points ... On both PC's, I disabled the SR Task earlier in Task Scheduler > Microsoft > Windows > SystemRestore ... and no Restore Point was created. Now, I could have sworn I had disabled the SR Task after the last CU, as it's one of things I check after a CU ... but either I forgot or something re-enabled it ... so I need to verify if disabling the SR Task is actually what stopped the Restore Point from being created and if it's getting re-enabled.

Desktop - Defender Verification Task ran @ 9:24 PM and NO Restore Point was Created.
Laptop - Defender Verification Task ran @ 8:08 PM and NO Restore Point was Created.

    Update:
Well so much for that idea...
SR task is still disabled, but Defender Verification / Window Modules Installer created a restore point on my laptop at 9:27 PM ... desktop defender task haven't run yet today, as I was using it around the time they appear to normally run on it. Figure it'll catch up in the next couple of hours, so I can check it.

    Update:
Yep, Desktop created a restore and SR Task was still disabled

I ran across the following just now .. I didn't have the key, so I added it to the registry on my desktop PC. Lets see what happens :)

Sounds good. Question is Registry doesn't have that entry.

Neither of my PC's had the Installer key under Windows, I had to add it and then add LimitSystemRestoreCheckpointing dword to the Installer key.

Note: After adding the Installer key and LimitSystemRestoreCheckpointing dword per the above ... it automatically got added to the following key ... I did NOT manually add it .. lol
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\WOW6432Node\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\Installer
