Windows Defender Slow Scans on an Intel I7 Desktop

    Hi All

Issue is Defender scans really slow, like over 12 hours if I choose to do a full scan, Previous was Avast that was removed with the tool, Malwarebytes 3 Free, Is it cause I use the configure defender x64 utlity to up the cloud protection level and such

    Any advice appreciated

Depends on the size and number of file Defender has to scan. I have 50GB, Defender full scan takes 4-5 hrs. I run Malwarebytes Premium and just let Defender do it's (quick scan) own thing. Never had any problems. Do a full scan before you go to bed, I bet Defender will seem much quicker.

Oh ok, just wanted to do 1 full scan after activating it, and then just do quick scans unless quick scan finds something. Whereas with Avast I was doing full scans weekly, but think gonna get off that strategy, and do one every maybe 3 months

I have currently returned to AVAST (very custom, very minimal installation). I am finding that WD disk I/O access is getting on my nerves lately. WD is very good for the average Joe, but if you have got the knowledge, you may find AVAST is faster in a lot of scenarios when properly configured. And just because I am a gamer, AVAST game mode is nice too.
So far I have noticed Steam and games start up faster under AVAST when compared to WD.
And don't make me talk about traversing a huge folder full of installation programs (executables). WD is slow as hell here, even for displaying icons.

Yeah I ended up Choosing Avast Free for I7 Desktop and I7 Laptop, as well Defender still seemed slow for some reason, I thought i'd try it again after upgrading Desktop to 16gb of ram, but still seemed to take ages, exe slow to show icons, games seemed to take longer to launch with Defender.

was up at 5a.m. eastern time working on the Desktop, just finished laptop lol

Same here. I have made several comparisons today too because I have Macrium Reflect images with both AVAST and WD. I think Microsoft should improve (or at least do some testing) about WD abysmal disk I/O performance. It is very noticeable doing some operations: opening and closing programs; Steam launches 50% faster with AVAST; even doing a dism /online /cleanup-image /startcomponentcleanup is slightly faster with AVAST. The only thing that is better when using WD is boot time, but not by a big margin anyway.

Another curiosity: Using NTLite gives you a big warning if using WD... claiming the process it is going to be SLOW...

PS - I like WD a lot. I am not an AVAST or any other third-party AV advocate. It's just AVAST feel a lot snappier to me, on my current scenario (IT guy and gamer).

Right on all accounts after testing it for a week, I was like yeah gonna use Avast lol, and probably last switch of protection software for a while lol.

    Now just relaxes lol
