Warning - Fake Windows Defender warning

Whilst browsing a what looked like a bona fida Windows Defender warning appeared on full screen, stating I needed to do an immediate scan with link provided, as there were three serious infections on my computer.

I immediately closed all open apps, did scans with Defender and Mbam, both stating clean....did think about doing a print screen prior to closing down, but decided not to take a risk.

I cannot over emphasise how authentic this warning appeared including M$ logo.

They ( hackers) are getting sneakier all the time. Somebody less experienced could easily fall for it.

    Hi there
why on earth would WD ask you to scan from any URL link -- seems bonkers to me - obvious scam (or worse).

    Cheers

I got that as well and had to use task manager to get rid of it.

This tactic was also performed yesterday by telephone call supposedly from Microsoft that I was infected. I just ignored it.

Try downloading Malware bytes, if it says it's there, in the settings, (of Windows 10) search for "show hidden settings" and turn it on, then, somewhere, the file in Malware bytes will be located, I once got a virus so bad I the administrator of the computer could not delete it... If that happens, delete it in Malwarebytes. If that doesn't work, there's the internet..

Yes, often these popups won't allow you to even close the browser, let alone the "warning" window !
