Some say Defender has gotten good enough that it's all that's necessary, and some advocate third party AV apps.

For myself, I use eSet's Nod32 AV plus Defender. Malwarebytes is another good one. I don't recommend Norton or McAfee because of early history with both of them.

I agree, Stitch, as long as he runs a paid version, rather than the free version of MBAM. Which can be a bit of a financial hit, but worth it.

Since you are open to opinions, I think Windows defender is good enough. I also have the free version of Malwarebytes installed and I scan with that every once in a while just to get a second opinion [but its latest version leaves a component open with its icon on the System tray that I then close manually].

Whilst Windows defender has improved significantly over the past year or so, it is often outranked in tests of AV applications because of its worse than average effects on opening / installing some applications even though its AV protection levels are frequently greater than others.

What none of the AV testing groups report on, even in their 'usability' assessments, is ease of use. A year & a bit ago, I worked my way through four other AV applications and they all required greater effort during setup / routine use. Windows defender, on the other hand, just works without my having to bother doing anything with it.

So, there's another opinion for you. It is no more than that.

My Dell came with a third-party AV on it. I used that AV's specialist removal tool to ensure all remnants were removed. Doing so is an essential precaution because you may not notice any symptoms for ages so you'll never be able to put 2 & 2 together if anything strange does end up happening [I once found that network copying of large files failed without any apparent link with AV four years after uninstalling a third-party AV because I had not used the specialist removal tool at the time; I then ran it & the problem disappeared immediately]

Gordie, the free Malwarebytes won't expire. Just be sure to run it frequently, because it won't run by itself. I got a deal on eSet for three computers or I'd probably be running a free AV myself.
