    Firewall Windows 10... reset?

Senior, moderately skilled user, home PC on wired LAN with one other computer. For some reason I have been having connection issues with popup windows citing Firewall blocking. I have tried doing a reset in the Defender Security section but got no help. The issue came to light when I tried to connect to my router via its URL. My #1 computer was blocked but my #2 had no problem. Is there some way I can purge all INCOMING and OUTGOING rules and SETTINGS and start "fresh" with the firewall? Won't It reset itself at next reboot?

Have you attempted to disconnect #1 computer from the router then reconnect after one minute. There's a couple of other options 1. You could try the power cycling method, unplug the power from the router for one minute the re-power and see if this solves your problem. Routers have a reset button, it's usually on the back or on the bottom of the router. Look for a small hole through which you can insert a paper clip, hold the reset button down for 30 secs this will factory reset the router. If the router was password protected or customized settings you will have to reapply the password settings.

Thanks for your reply, Stitch194. Have tried all your suggestions but to no avail. I have also tried using other browsers in #1 computer and still could not connect. The problem is definitely in Windows firewall on my computer #1. I am going to explore uninstalling Defender Firewall and doing a reinstall... if that's possible.

It could be the firewall in your router that's causing it not to connect. You might check that in your setup options.

Edit: Also, which browser are you using? Firefox can and will keep you from connecting to certain sites, although they're perfectly legit.

Thanks for your reply, Wynona. I routinely use Chrome, but neither Chrome or Firefox can access my router from my #1 computer... #2 computer connects without problems. Also, I did not know my router (Netgear WNDR3700 v1) had its own firewall.

    This might help, or not.

Thanks for this link. A helpful local geek told me that I should not have any Outbound Rules in the Windows Firewall and I should delete any that were there (there were a lot). I deleted all and now I have free access to my router again. He also told me that he uses his modem firewall instead of his iOS firewall. Should I turn off Defender Firewall and use my modem firewall instead?

Good deal! I wonder how all of those got there? No telling, I guess, since Windows does what it wants to.

No, don't turn off Defender. It's not a firewall. Here's an explanation of the differences:

    Hi.
Wynona is right; don't turn off Windows Firewall. But, you should also check if there is a firmware update for your router.
I would recommend running ADWCleaner just to see if there isn't something in that system that shouldn't be there.

If you want a more robust firewall than Windows, use the free version of ZoneAlarm.

Thanks to Wynona and simrick... I misspoke earlier. I meant to say turn off Defender Firewall only and let the modem and router firewalls handle things. But, I will also run the ADWCleaner and check out the ZoneAlarm Firewall as well. Thanks to you both.
