I have moved on from AVG. I was sick of the nonsense associated with it. I use Kaspersky now which is far, far less intrusive.

But I agree - AVG does still offer protection, even when it lies to you and says it's been turned off. What it should say is auto updates are turned off - the protection itself is still on.

I am unbelievably late to offer a thank you for continuing to pay attention to this thread.

I have actually made the decision, for which some are really giving me a hard time about, to try and get the company to change a few things.

This particular case is just flat out false information and I am not quite getting why any respectable executive in a company like AVG would be allowing that to be started, let alone continued.

I assume there is some sort of commercial advantage to having the customers having that set at automatic for them to be using language which is obviously false.

I only recently realized that hitting that "Fix" button turned the automatic setting back on. That is another very strange manner of operating. I hit that "Fix" button just to see what would happen and when nothing happened I just thought that was mighty odd and continued with whatever work I was engaged in at that time. I only just this morning realized the setting had been changed. There was no indication given that the setting had been changed, which for a responsible UI style of communication seems very odd in itself.

I am just not getting it, all this really strange way of communicating, or not communicating, with the customer.

But there are other problems at that company in the ways they are handling communications in other areas and I basically feel that there are a lot of folks on the Net that have enough trouble handling this or that way of doing this or that or navigating here and there and when a company that states it is a responsible entity is making so many mistakes in the ways this one is, I think somebody has to try and help the unfortunates you don't know things are wrong.

So I decided to try and get some changes done there, but it is really, really difficult and takes so much time and about 24 hours ago a group of rather bright human beings basically informed me that I was absolutely stupid, or worse, for doing what I am doing.

They are probably right, but I think I'll stick with it.

It just seems so strange that a company would be doing these sorts of things.

Well, sorry for that long whatever-that-is --- and I do appreciate seeing that you pay attention to even older threads you had a part in. You should be running that company.

I appreciate the kind words. It's unfortunate that in 2019/2020 we still have to worry not only about online threats, but the companies that are supposed to be offering protection against them. Not only can we not trust them to write software that allows us to have control over the functions we should have, we have to worry that they may not even be providing the protection they claim they are.

I'm so glad I moved away from Avast/AVG. I will say overall Kaspersky has treated me well so far, considering it's the free version with some of the more advanced settings locked out. You do have to disable a couple things that I don't love running by default, but It's been far less annoying than Avast/AVG. Avast frequently used to corrupt my downloads while scanning them. Kaspersky doesn't do that.
