Windows Defender Run New Advanced Scan Crashes To Desktop

Up until a month ago, never had a problem running a full scan. After last big update when I open WD and select "Run New Advanced Scan" it crashes To desktop. I can run quick scan no problem.

Windows 10 64-bit on desktop computer.

I've run sfc /scannow with no issues detected.

Similar to this thread Windows Defender Anti-Virus Options disappears [CU/ 1703]

But I'm not running another antivirus program.

In my event viewer I have the error: "unable to start a dcom server"
happened while starting this command C:\\FileCoAuth.exe - Embedding

I also ran windows safety scanner and nothing found. Any ideas?

Cannot run Edge - Browser Broker fails

I think the key is the dcom server error. The above link is a similar issue with Edge. Note post #3.

Other posts have indicated a registry problem. Unless you like solving mysteries, I would recommend a Reset or another installation using the Windows Media Creation Tool (may be best).

Are you launching WD from a taskbar icon or thru the Settings menu ?

Some have an issue with launching from the taskbar.

I tried both the taskbar icon and through the settings. The result is the same.

Did the problem begin after the April update or last Tuesday's update ? If so, you may uninstall those updates to see if any effect. Also, check Event Viewer for errors and disable any extensions, other AV, or software that you may think causes issues.

Sorry, I can't be more definitive. Others have the same issue. You may want to use the search bar at top of page and also google. If I recall correctly, not sure, some said the update was the problem and MSN has yet to fix. And some may have an older system.

Good idea to post your system specs.

Thanks for the reply torre! It could have started after either of the updates. I don't run the advanced scan very often, so I noticed it last week.

I updated w/ my system specs.

I have the identical problem: nothing happens on clicking 'Run advanced scan'. Like @STC, I have used it rarely so cannot be sure when the problem started. (BTW, is there no historical list of full scans accessible?)

I'd like to confirm some of the things that have been said here and in this thread

    windows defender scan

    • It definitely started happening after the 1803 update
    • the only thing broken on my system is the task bar icon
    • Go to windows settings>update and security>windows security>virus and threat protection..it works when accessing it like that

Lastly, you should have "Scan with Windows Defender" on your Directory/drive/folder context menus. Works for me, and that's the simplest way to get it done.
