Where should a small-to-medium business begin to protect itself against cyber threats?

Hi Allegheny -

I would suggest looking into Endpoint Security.

McAfee (owned by Intel) and Symantec are a couple of players in this area.
They scale from SMB to Fortune level organizations.

There are also other options to consider depending on the size of your company.

I was hoping to get some advice on techniques before being forced to run off and buy lots of expensive "solutions"...

Many companies are now starting to move away from the big players such as McAfee or Symantec especially after they migrate over to Windows 10 systems. They are now starting to use Windows Defender ATP with System Center Endpoint Protectoin (SCEP) to manage Defender from a centralized location.

And also, this is much more cost effective to manage as well.
