Sorry for the slow reply. I don't have or use protected folders (controlled access) so I'd just be guessing.

There must be other members who will help.

    That should work temporarily.

Download to other folder (not to desktop) and create a desktop shortcut to it.

I used this command (run in CMD as admin) to take ownership of MY desktop, I also download to desktop. Not sure, how it works with protected folders though, I have it disabled.
    Code:
    takeown /s %computername% /u %username% /f "%SystemDrive%\Users\Public\Desktop" /r /d y
    icacls "%SystemDrive%\Users\Public\Desktop" /grant:r %username%:(OI)(CI)F /t /l /q /c
    takeown /s %computername% /u %username% /f "%USERPROFILE%\Desktop" /r /d y
    icacls "%USERPROFILE%\Desktop" /grant:r %username%:(OI)(CI)F /t /l /q /c

So it is a choice to disable this feature to allow something through then enable if you want, or leave it disabled?
Maybe this would be like Windows before they created this feature?
That command gives one ownership of the machine so how does it help?
If I understand it, I could do it then copy it to my learning folder for future use?

If you can't work out how to configure it or add exceptions then leave it disabled. It is supposed to protect against ransomware etc. and stop it from accessing your files.

You could just download files to a location other than:

    • User: Documents, Pictures, Videos, Music, Desktop, Favorites
    • Public: Documents, Pictures, Videos, Music, Desktop

Then test to see if you get the same problem.

It depends on the browser used.

I am using the downloads folder for both Chrome and Edge as it is not one of the listed protected folders. I hope this way I can download but still keep ransomware on.
