Is anyone using Windows Defender Controlled folder access?

I spoke too soon. Some Microsoft apps are now being blocked from making changes. It would be nice to know what's whitelisted by default.

I found this new function of Windows 10 to be yet another pain in the ass, Windows 10 really is f-in annoying. I've turned off 'Controlled Folder Access' as it just creates problems and I cannot find the program it has blocked to change the settings.
Microsoft have really shot themselves in the foot with Windows 10 and given Apple a real boost by creating it.

In my situation this is not the case. Such notification from Defender is never completely readable om my Windows 10 desktop and frequently I cannot read the program I have to admit. Sometimes Task Management (Ctrl = Alt+ Del) helps, but not always.
How can I read the notification completely?

I don't fully understand your instructions.
I downloaded your zip-file and extracted it. When I opened the result I came in a Edge-environment that I only could stop via Windows Recovery.
But now I unsterstand that I can find the filed to unblock in Event Viewer of Windows (in Dutch: Logboeken; new for me).). I will try that next time when Defender gives such a notification.

Dude, I don't use Defender AT ALL. I try to disable as much of it as possible, either via Group Policy or via registry. I use REAL anti-virus software (currently testing out BitDefender, Panda Dome, and Avira Free as a replacement for Kaspersky) and REAL anti-Ransomware software (currently using Malwarebytes, I was using HitmanPro.Alert, I am kind of split between them as to which I like more), not the cheesmo stuff included with the product.

I am of the opinion that, from a point of view, Windows 10 is actually LESS secure than it's predecessors, as any computer that has two different security programs doing the same thing is vulnerable as the two programs may conflict with each other and leave a gap in the systems "armor" that could potentially be exploited by cyber-criminals. And with so much of Defender hidden beyond the users sight with no way to easily disable it, this issue is pretty serious to me. Serious enough to consider switching entirely to Linux.

Why on earth can't Windows implement things simply without always making them complicated

It's so easy in Linux to restrict folders, parts of folders, programs etc to users -- if you want to allow people say to use multimedia you create a group called say audio and make users members of that group -- or whatever.

This restricted Folders B/S looks like it was designed not by anybody in I.T but possibly by some comittee of non technical management !!

I'm all in favour of better security of an OS both from within (i.e users) and without (external threats etc) but hasn't Ms ever heard of K.I.S.S (Keep it simple - stupid) !!

As far as Windows defender goes it in my mind is no better or worse than most FREE products of this type - While I run it I tend to use my own "Human" security actions when on the Internet - it's relatively easy to avoid "cloned sites", fake emails and scams provided you know about these things.

I really think a lot of basic use of Internet, pitfalls to beware of and how scammers operate should be taught very early on in schools --even at the primary level than worrying about how many chariots did Julius Caesar lose when he attempted to invade Britain in 55 BC or whatever.

Still amazed though how some people just seem to regularly get their computers infected -- I have used some torrent sites in the past myself basically to source video - would be quite happy to buy the stuff legally (I subscribe to Netflix, Amazon Prime etc) but if it's not available in your area or an old great TV series some people are keeping alive then -- !! and have never had a computer infection. For example loved that series "The Invaders" although I believe now you can get it on DVD (region 1 from USA - but who has DVD players any more)
