Well, when I try to uninstall MSE it says it's already installed! Huh?
I tried to start Defender but I get an error code 0x8007139f. This might be because of Malwarebytes Anti-Malware on???
What did the Get help on this issue link tell you.

This sounds like an upgrade bug, it should NOT have carried over MSE. But ... people want their programs carried over, so it's sort of a catch 22 situation. Thy're both MS products and I think the upgrade should have just gone with Defender.

Now how to get your system in the pink? I'm not sure and I don't have the same issue (Defender and MSE) so it will be difficult to unravel. It might require turning off MSE/Defender services, then uninstalling - not sure.

It will take me some time to research (other things in the queue) - another member might stop by with a solution before I get back to this.

    In the meantime:

There are two places to provide feedback to or get answers from Microsoft for Windows 10.

Do I need Defender?-winfeed.png MS decided to include the Windows Feedback app in the production release of Windows 10.

Look for the Feedback app either on Start or in the Start menu list.

It must be a install bug. I upgraded from Win7 to 10. MS Media Player is still on my machine & MSE as well. But, how to get rid of them?

While on Win7 I installed a Pro version of Malwarebytes Anti-Malware & it provides internet & malware protection. It's running on Win10 now. When I disabled it & tried to start Defender, Defender appeared to start with no immediate error as before. But, it once again gave the error below:

When trying to uninstall MSE I first get this first (it says unavailable)

Then this while trying to uninstall.

Is there a way to force uninstall MSE?

If MSE is deactivated it can't do anything to harm you 'puter and should not interfere with anything.

    Thanks for the updates.

Media player is ok on Win10, the Groove app is a universal app for playing media.
Media Center that was not carried forward to Win10.

To remove Media Player: Right click to open the Win-x menu
Select Programs & Features at the top of the list
(or control Panel > Programs and Features)

Select Turn Windows Features on or off from the left hand pane
    Expand Media Features
Clear the checkbox for Windows Media Player

I don't know what else you can do about MSE - another member might come along with more help.

Deleted WMP. Thanks for the how-to, Slartybart.

MSE is harmless now but seeing that red fortress/flag X'ed out Do I need Defender?-capture3.jpg is a eye catching annoyance!

    Thanks everyone! :)

If you right click on it can you remove it ?

Maybe you can unlock the task bar and remove it ? One of these might work.

No. A small window opens that says "Open". That's all.

If you unlock the task bar and click on the flag, you can drag it out of there.
    To the trash ?

    You're welcome GARoss.

See if there's a way to turn off messages from MSE in
Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Security and Maintenance > Security

    and
see if you can turn off the icon in
Settings > System > Notifications... > Turn system icons on or off
