Can't disable Windows Defender with Kaspersky

I've found the page that advises on how to disable Windows Defender on here, but the screen I get in the 'Windows Defender Security Centre' looks nothing like I see there, and there is no option to turn off real time protection, only a way of changing scan options. I keep getting warnings that Windows Firewall is turned off which is very annoying, as I have Kaspersky firewall on. MsMpEng Windows Defender process is running in Process Explorer. Can anyone help?

Hi, you may be thinking it is not disabled- these days, its real time scanning should be disabled as you have a 3rd party AV installed.

Yes, you will see a Defender icon in your system tray. I have MSpEng.exe running too.

    Go here- is Kaspersky shown?
(Ignore the references to multiple AV's on mine- SecureAplus is a specialist program designed to run with 3rd party AV's)

if you search or browse the extensive tutorial section, there are many on Defender- even one about how to disable it completely should you so choose.

Thanks dalchina. I think something is wrong as Kaspersky is not listed on that page, just the Windows Defender scan options. I am getting strange system hangups with Windows Explorer crashing a lot.

Hmm, how long have you had problems- is it a new installation - have you had an update or upgrade recently? Made significant changes?

    Basics:
    1. Test your disk - download and run Hard Disk Sentinel (trial) and post a screenshot.
    2. Admin command prompt:
    chkdsk c: /scan
and post the result. If ok, then
    sfc /scannow
    and post the result.

Suggest you uninstall Kaspersky for the present.

    Please post your Update History.

I think the crashes have been going on for 3 or 4 weeks. Not sure how to post update history, my Windows build is Version 1709 (Windows 10 x64)

    Scans all seem OK

    That's encouraging.
When does explorer crash? If you rt click? Or sthg else?
Does it crash after you do a clean boot?

(Update History is in Settings e.g. in Cortana's search box type Update History)

Honestly I think it's only when I'm using Microsoft Edge, particular when I save images from it . I'm not sure why I persist in using it! It is still a mystery why Kaspersky does not seem properly registered with Windows, maybe a reinstall will fix it?

I'd certainly uninstall Kaspersky just to get that out of the way- who knows, it might even be related to your other symptoms. Try that first and see if there's any change. Don't reinstall it.

If it doesn't uninstall cleanly there's probably a Kaspersky 'manual uninstall' tool.

Helpfully, tacos named the screenshot file 'hdsentinel screenshot.PNG' so it looks like it's this...
