I don't think he allowed them in. He called me immediately after getting the screen and I had him unplug the Internet cable and power it off.
He doesn't use his PC for banking, etc. Mainly browsing and e-mail.
I got it cleaned out this morning. But when I installed and ran Ccleaner the first time it hung up on cleaning the Edge cookies. I had to run Malwarebytes and Super Antispyware and then Ccleaner ran OK.
Hi folks
Why do you guys persist on using an infected machine to cleanse itself -- as I said it's a bit like knowing a plane is defective and as the pilot you are told to fly it and fix it while it's in the air !!!.
Simply with FREE Macrium restore a CLEAN OS image -- shouldn't take you more than 30 mins and will be 100% safe.
If you don't have a decent backup start taking them and then you'll NEVER be bothered with this sort of B/S again or spend HOURS on trying to clean an infected system.
Too many "Security people" trying to flog outdated products (WD is as good as it gets on the current versions of Windows 10) or save their jobs. I agree for corporate / large scale enterprise Networks this stuff is important -- for home users / small networks the sell by date of these old programs, methodolgy and systems has long since passed. You are using old C20 methodology to fix C21 problems --get with it and use MODERN methods --save yourself a huge wodge of time too,
Cheers

Sometimes I.E. and Edge does not want to release it's junk to Ccleaner. I don't know why.
I use Ccleaner a few times a day and still have to wait for I.E. and Edge. The less one uses Ccleaner the longer the wait.

When you are dealing with a client/friend's PC most of the time there is no backup. You must do what you have to do. I make backups for my systems but that's very often not the case with many users. I preach backups to my clients but that often falls on deaf ears or one backup was made a year ago....
I think the advice and applications mentioned in this thread are all valuable. I appreciate reading about clean up utilities that I don't own. Beats a reinstall or losing 2 weeks work on a pc loading a system image. However I do find system images more than valuable. But, there are always other more gentle methods than contributing to wearing out a Hard drive/SSD
