Just to throw in my two sense here. Here is what I use and I quite happily like it all.

    ESET Smart Security
    MBAM 3 Preimum
    MS Defender Lite Scanning
    MVPS HOST File
    UBlock Origin (Chrome)

    Very true Martijn.

Problems are found by Microsoft and their partners of exploits in their operating systems and programs for years.
I'm sure Windows 10 will have Microsoft Security Updates for years, just like the previous operating systems.
That is why Microsoft has security updates once those exploits are discovered.

The millions of bad guys are always looking for a way to get into Microsoft Windows.
It's a never ending battle trying to stop new found exploits.

My understanding is; Defender is designed to block infection and/or remove them. It does't block the method (exploit) the infection get into the system. That is where Windows Security Update take over to patch the hole (path) the infection got in through.
Of course Microsoft or Defender can't control the person behind the keyboard.
If I have a brain fart and let something in; well that is my fault. Hopefully Defender and or Malwarebytes will be able to clean up my mistake.

Actually, since Windows Defender is part of Windows Defender Security Center (WDSC) and WDSC has App & browser control (exploit protection) since the Fall Creators Update I would say that Windows Defender does have exploit protection.

Recently changed from Panda Cloud (Free) to Bitdefender (Free) and am supremely happy with it. I also use SuperAntiSyware (Free) and the Pro version of Ccleaner.

Have tried most of them over the years; now I rely on Windows Defender solely. It works very well with my system: no performance hits, virus/malware free, daily definition updates

The best antivirus is a mixture of common sense, knowledge, layered protection and many backups.

I now only use Windows defender as having tried others. I find defender up to the job and does everything I want it to do.
I've been perfectly happy with WD, also. That, plus always using a VPN seems to present zero problems with malware. I also use Edge Browser, which also has pretty good security measures built in.

I used to have Malwarebyte (free, so only as an on-demand scanner) but that was before version 3. Since then it's become too much of an AV and hooks into the system more than I'd like, so rather than upgrade I uninstalled it.

In its place I occasionally scan with AdwCleaner (no install required) and have turned on the PUA (aka PUP) protection in Defender.

Enable or Disable Windows Defender PUA Protection in Windows 10
I turned on the PUA protection and Defender now objects to Wise Disk Cleaner which some on this forum recommend. Kaspersky Total Security which I recently uninstalled never objected to Wise Disk Cleaner. Is Wise Disk Cleaner safe to use or not?

Yes, WD's PUA detection is somewhat nitpicky (better safe than sorry I guess). Today it deleted an Auslogics software (registry packer) that I hadn't used ever, btw.
